This Week in RPGs – December 10th, 2023

This week in RPGs news: The Game Awards 2023 have been and gone but not without plenty of RPG news to finish out the year. Lots of announcements, reveals and updates happened this week. Dragon Age: Dreadwolf gets a teaser, Monster Hunter Wilds was unveiled, sci-fi RPG Exodus announced, Black Myth Wukong release date announced, Baldur’s Gate 3 wins Game of the Year 2023 and much more in this week’s news.

Dragon Age Dreadwolf

  • Before we get into The Game Awards news, there was a quick teaser trailer this week for Dragon Age: Dreadwolf. Absent from TGA, the trailer featured a few locations of the game and also teased a full reveal will be coming in Summer 2024.
  • The under-one-minute teaser features the beautiful vistas and the city of Antiva. It also shows the shoreline of Rivain with sparkling seas and a more stormy Anderfels. The short video features the different areas of Thedas and voice clips from different characters that represent different factions. A new blog post by BioWare hints at the current state of Thedas, being on the “precipice of change”.
  • It all sounds very ominous but we’ll have to wait until next year in summer to have the full reveal of the game and hopefully the release date. Can’t wait until then? Head to our Dragon Age: Dreadwolf wiki for all the latest info so far.
  • As with all news mentioned in this video, the link is in the description below.

Black Myth: Wukong

  • Get ready to journey west in Black Myth: Wukong as the game was revealed to be launching on August 20th 2024. A brand new English voice acted trailer was revealed at The Game Awards 2023, showing off the upcoming souls-like and unveiling the launch date, coming to platforms PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC next year.
  • In case you missed it, Black Myth Wukong follows the adventures of the Monkey King, Sun Wukong. In this reimagining of the classic Journey to the West, the game lets players play as the multifaceted fighter and god as he wields the Five Elements and transformations in combat.
  • The enemies in this trailer look creatively evil, with one bearing glowing lanterns for a head. Interestingly Wukong is seen sliding down snowy mountains, showing new ways to get around in the snow. There are also a number of larger-than-life bosses which should provide some epic fights.

Rise of the Ronin

  • A world premiere trailer revealed at The Game Awards 2023 that Team Ninja’s next game Rise of the Ronin will be launching on March 22nd 2024. A brand new trailer previewed some of the action, which will be heading to exclusively to Playstation 5. Pre-orders will start December 14th, 2023.
  • Rise of the Ronin takes the player in Japan during the 19th century during a time of stagnation and oppression. Playing as a Ronin, the story will follow the destiny of the main protagonist and the characters featured in the trailer, and how they are linked.
  • Players can explore upon horseback and even take up a glider to see things from above. Use melee weapons such as swords and spears to fight up close. Take up ranged weapons such as firearms and throwable weapons to attack from afar. For a more stealth Ronin approach you can use grappling ropes.
  • Pre-order bonuses were also announced which includes an armor set, and four combat styled including Nioh ryu for katana.

No Rest for the Wicked

  • Developer Moon Studios behind such games as the metroidvania Ori and the Blind Forest are taking on the Diablo genre in their new project No Rest for the Wicked.
  • A fantasy medieval RPG described to have intense action combat that requires skill and timing will be key to staying alive. Set to release sometime in early access Q1 2024.
  • Taking place in the year 841, in the fantasy kingdom of Isola Sacra, the king has fallen. Now with an empty throne, there has been conflict about who will take up his seat. The timing couldn’t be worse as a plague descends on the island nation, inflicting disease-ridden beasts.
  • Fighting solo or in online co-op with up to three other players, fight back the monsters and foes. What’s interesting as even in a group you can split up to tackle different challenges.
  • The game will be hitting early access early 2024 on PC, with platforms PS5 and Xbox Series X|S also planned for development. A game showcase will be happening March 1st to take a closer look at the game.

Monster Hunter Wilds

  • Capcom’s next major monster hunter titled was unveiled with an announcement Monster Hunter Wilds. The game will be heading to PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S in 2025.
  • The Action-RPG got a debut trailer which showed monster riding and monster gliding in a quick reveal trailer. The trailer which is more of a teaser than anything, shows a player using a smaller monster to ride through the Wilds’ landscape, similar to the Palamute riding that was seen in MHRise.  However, one stark difference is being able to glide upon the back of the same monster.
  • The release date is some time away, but according to Capcom producer Ryozo Tsujimoto, more news will be coming Summer 2024. What do you think of the trailer? Let us know in the comments below.

Baldur’s Gate 3 GOTY

  • Larian Studios is not short of the awards this season as they gained another six awards for their CRPG Baldur’s Gate 3.
  • Sven Vincke will need to make more room on his shelf (or game awards room which it’s probably becoming at this point) as the studio collects a few more.
  • Most notably the game was crowned Game of the Year 2023, which beat contenders Alan Wake 2, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, Resident Evil 4 Remake, Super Mario Bros. Wonder and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.
  • They also won the categories: Best Performance with Neil Newbon for the role of Astarion, Best Community Support, Best RPG, Best Multiplayer, and took home the Player’s Voice vote.
  • That’s not the only good news, as they also announced that the game is finally available on Xbox Series X|S. While it was no surprise we’d be getting a release date reveal at TGA 2023 which was announced to be arriving in December, it’s still great to see the game make its way to the console after a long road to get there.
  • The game also had some astonishing stats revealed this week, with over 1.3 million players now having completed the game. The title also received a big update 5.1 recently which included the new Honour Mode adding some permadeath challenge, new epilogue scenes and more.

Exodus

  • If you’re looking for more spacefaring-based RPGs you’re in luck as Exodus was announced this week. The studio is made up of industry veterans from such developers as BioWare. They have collectively worked on titles such as Dragon Age: Origins, Halo 4, Mass Effect and Star Wars: The Old Republic.
  • The studio behind it is Archetype Entertainment, a studio backed by Wizards of the Coast and Hasbro. The game is a narrative-driven title set to give plenty of player agency and is a AAA game.
  • The trailer gives a few clues to the game’s main features, including Time Dilation, which could be part of the game’s mechanics and story.
  • As for the role of Traveler, players are sent out on a quest to help humanity survive by finding tech to fight off the hostile race called the Celestials.
  • Travelling through lightspeed takes a toll, as time can skip decades in human years. Choices made in the game will have consequences. Expect alien weapons, companions and a deep progression system.
  • Also the actor Matthew McConaughey is in it, and it’s his first video game role which he seemed rather hyped about when he appeared on stage at TGA.
  • Exodus will be coming to PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC.

The second will arrive in Spring 2024, The Rising Tide. Echoes of the Fallen DLC unlocks a brand new narrative arc, new battles, an array of weapons, accessories, and an increased level cap.

  • The first DLC for Final Fantasy 16 fleshes out the narrative surrounding the Fallen. While you won’t need to play the DLC in order to understand the main game, it will provide a “deeper insight” according to Final Fantasy XVI’s Lead Combat Designer and the DLC’s director, Takeo Kujiraoka.
  • Arriving in Spring 2024, The Rising Tide, promises to introduce new trials and tribulations, including an epic showdown between Clive and the mythic Eikon, Leviathan.
