Prince of Persia The Lost Crown Surprises Fans Wanting More

In the years following the release of the beloved Prince of Persia franchise, there has been no news about its continuation, except for the Price of Persia: The Sands of Time remake. However, this has already been delayed twice with no significant developments so far. But all of this has recently changed with the announcement of the Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown.

The Summer Game Fest 2023 is just getting started this June 8, 2023, with numerous updates on the games we are very excited to cover such as Path of Exile 2, Remnant From the Ashes 2, and more! One of the highlights is the reveal of the Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown, which maintains its core identity but with a Metroidvania twist! The game was showcased with an extensive trailer, demonstrating high-quality visuals, captivating sound effects, and engaging gameplay that does justice to the series – finally.

People have been asking for another Prince of Persia game for years now with suggestions of what Ubisoft could possibly dive into. Although they wanted something that would allow them to relive what they have experienced in the past, some of them have expressed an interest in turning the succeeding titles into a platforming game that showcases its action playstyle. And true enough, Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown is aiming to do just that.

What Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown Has to Offer

At its core, the new game is inviting players to embark on an action-adventure platformer, which is set in a fantasy-styled Persian world in Mount Oaf, where like in The Sands of Time, you have the power to change the laws of time and space for your best interests. Here, you will play a character known as Sargon who is a prodigious swordsman who is also equally skilled at jumping across buildings and executing dangerous moves in the air. But what truly makes him unique is his ability to wield Time Powers.

Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown brings exciting changes to the series. Instead of playing as the Prince, you take on the role of Sargon, a new hero and a member of “The Immortals”. His mission is to rescue the titular prince, and in doing so, save the empire. The game features a variety of elements that make it more akin to Metroidvania than anything we have seen before. Some examples are challenging platforming, intricate puzzles, lethal action combos, unique boss fights, and intricate abilities.

Prince of Persia The Lost Crown - Combat

This is a clear throwback to the original Prince of Persia game, which was released in the late 90s, and one that revolutionized platforming by showcasing precise acrobatics. More than a decade later, The Sands of Time aimed to add a modern twist to the experience by placing it on a 3D spectrum. What’s interesting to see is how this new iteration will successfully combine both playstyles to create a worthy successor to the Prince of Persia franchise.

Picking Apart the Gameplay Trailer

The Lost Crown’s gameplay trailer not only showcases impressive platforming but also highlights its combat mechanics. Here, Sargon is seen going up against multiple foes such as humans and regular-sized creatures as well as unforgettable titans such as the massive bone-headed wolf and the manticore.

Combat is particularly reminiscent of other successful Metroidvanias like Dead Cells and Hollow Night in terms of how fluid, realistic, and beautifully rendered they are. Not only are you a dedicated melee-focused character because of your sword-wielding capabilities but you are also adept in ranged combat due to your trusty bow. You also have a parrying system and finisher moves to finally destroy your opponents with.

What makes Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown promising is that its developer is none other than Ubisoft Montpellier which is the renowned studio behind the beloved Rayman Origins and Rayman Legends so it is safe to say at this point, that the game is in good hands. With their expertise in creating satisfying 2D platformers, we cannot think of any other team who can better take on the helm to deliver a remarkable Prince of Persia experience.

Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown is scheduled for release on January 18, 2024, via PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch. Fans can finally look forward to diving back into this mystical universe and experiencing an incredible new adventure!
