Granblue Fantasy: Relink is a game with a great story and amazing characters that tie it all together. From the franchise’s gacha system roots, the developers spared no effort in translating every layer of their character designs into the modern Action RPG world.

One thing that sets the game apart from other RPGs out there is the sheer volume of characters that you get to play, each with their own unique kits and playstyles, which you can even customize further should you want to. Today we’re going to lay out how exactly you’ll get to play all the characters waiting for you in the game in this Granblue Fantasy Relink Guide!

Granblue Fantasy Relink Guide: Which Characters Are Allies?

There are a lot of important characters in the game, and it does a good job of making sure you know they’re important, especially throughout the game’s plot. When you start, the game will let you get used to the mechanics first only giving you the main character to control, which is either Gran or Djeeta depending on who you choose. You’ll even get to start a whole boss with just him while Lyria’s supporting you.

Don’t worry, you’ll start it alone but you won’t have to try and finish it on your own. Katalina, Rackam, and Io will come back you up, while Rosetta and Eugen will help deal the final blow. Initially, you’ll mostly be playing with this main Skyfarer Group. Lyria and Vyrn are also with you, but we’ll get to them in a bit.

At this point in the first chapter, you’ll have these characters technically recruited already and you’ll be able to customize them through the main menu. Later on in the same chapter, after you meet Rolan, they’ll join your party in the main menu and you’ll be able to switch up and use your characters however you want. Each character has their own Skills and character growth to bring to the table. There are a total of fourteen additional characters for you to customize, control, and build however you like.

Granblue Fantasy Relink Guide: Will Rolan Be Playable?

We’ve played through the entirety of the game and, spoiler alert, fan-favorite Rolan will not become a playable character at any point, at least in the game’s base form without any downloadable content or updates. Nevertheless, you’ll be hearing and seeing Rolan for a sizeable portion of the main campaign, so if you’re curious about him and his own story, you’ll still be in for a treat!

Are Lyria and Vyrn Playable?

Both the charming Lyria and our resident tiny dragon Vyrn will be with you almost for the entire game! Unfortunately, they will not become playable characters as well at any point, again at least before any downloadable content or update.

However, they’ll be your staunch helpful Allies almost all throughout your playthrough. Vyrn will be helping you while you’re out and about in the explorable world as your guide if you ever need help finding your way to your objective markers. You’ll be able to press the Navryngate button to have the little guy fly ahead of you and shine a literal light on the path of your objective.

Lyria will be a companion for you whenever you fight. Even if she’s not technically a playable character, you’ll be able to see her character model helping you out during combat engagements. As your guest, she’s able to heal and support the party from time to time. As a near little treat, both Lyria and Vyrn can be seen actually there with you when you’re running around and just exploring.

When and How Can I Recruit More Allies?

Eventually, your party will face some difficulties that Sierokarte, your all-around merchant, will take notice of. In the fourth Chapter, determined to help in his own merchant-esque way, he’ll give you your very first Crewmate Card.

Crewmate Cards are what you exchange to have Siero call upon new Allies to join your crew and help you on your adventures and challenges. Allies you call upon with Crewmate Cards essentially become playable characters you can customize and control at any point in the game. Whenever you call upon an ally, you get a corresponding MSP or Mastery Point bonus for your characters to use. This is how you mainly get all the characters in the game – surprise surprise, it’s not gacha!

Where to Get More Crewmate Cards

Throughout the game, you’ll be given four more Crewmate Cards automatically as you progress. Two of them will be given by Siero once again in Chapters 6 and 8. Later on, after you finish the game, another two of them will be granted as a reward for reaching the Veteran Skyfarer Skyfarer Grade, and after you defeat a certain Key Quest as you try to reach the next Skyfarer Grade. You may be wondering, “That makes five. There’s so many other characters but we only get to play five of them?”

Fear not, for you can also claim Crewmate Cards as rewards for certain Quests in the game! If you head to the Quest Center, you’ll see that some Quests list the Crewmate Card as a First-Clear Reward (look for the blue/purple card!). This means that you can get the rewards listed there, including the Crewmate Card, when you clear that Quest for the first time ever.

So far we’ve unlocked the Maniac difficulty Quests, and we’ve found six Crewmate Cards in total, from the easier difficulties all the way to Maniac! The harder difficulties are unlocked in post-game, where you increase your Skyfarer Rank by basically completing certain Key Quests, and then a Rank-Up Quest.

We suspect that the last two Crewmate Cards we’re missing, to add up to the thirteen additional recruitable allies in Siero’s list, are just hiding amongst Quests we have yet to unlock, or in the next and final difficulty – Proud. So if you want those characters, get to finishing your Quests!

Get More Crewmate Cards Tip: Use the Wish List!

The Wish List System is a feature that players get prompted to use pretty early on in the game, as soon as you look at your Treasure and materials for anything for the first time. You can basically put any material you’re lacking for your upgrade or forging processes into the Wish List, and the game will mark them with a magnifying glass while you’re looking through NPC Side Quests, Quests, and even Siero’s Treasure Trade feature.

Yes, it works on the Crewmate Card too! When you do find your first Quest at the Quest Counter that offers the Crewmate Card as a reward (this should be Saga Grande: The Beginning at Normal difficulty), you can look at the Details of the Quest’s reward list, select the Crewmate Card, and then press the button to add it to your Wish List. This way, you’ll be able to easily sort your Quests and be able to easily see which of them gives you a Crewmate Card upon completion. Trust us, there are over a hundred of these Quests so this will definitely be useful!

SPOILER WARNING! The following information contains spoilers for the main campaign. If you don’t want to be spoiled, skip to the end (don’t click on the **SPOILERS**)! Skip to the next section.

Recruiting Id, the 14th Ally

In the ninth chapter of the story, you and the Skyfaring party will find yourselves barely scraping by against a shadowy copy of the primeval titan of vitality Furycane, who you should’ve already managed to control with Lyria’s powers back at Tempeal.

In the challenging fight, Lyria becomes wide open for a moment, and Furycane Nihilla is able to take the opportunity to make an attempt at her life. Luckily, she is saved by an unlikely hero – Id, an enemy who you’ve had to cross swords with multiple times in the campaign.

Resolved to put a stop to Lilith, who now threatens the future of the entire world, he temporarily joins you as you rush to the peak of the Pillar of Vayoi toward the final battle. While this is only supposedly temporary, you are able to customize him at this point and put him in your party.

Unfortunately, at the end of the chapter, events will unfold that simply make it impossible for Id to stay with you, and after tantalizing you with his presence on your main menu, he will leave your party.

Surprise surprise again! After you finish the final chapter, Id will be back, and you’ll actually need to control him primarily for this little excursion, before Chapter 0. When you do, post-game officially starts as you reach Chapter 0, the Veteran Skyfarer Rank, and you’ll be rewarded with Id as an official playable character, along with the Crewmate Card we mentioned previously.

Do New Allies Start at Zero?

Don’t you worry, ‘cause the answer is no! Whenever you recruit an ally, they will already be leveled up to an amount close to the current levels of your character. Although we can’t exactly pinpoint the exact calculation the game uses, you’ll already be able to see their Stats and levels when you browse through the list of Allies at Siero’s, and you’ll see they’re already somewhat higher. This way you won’t have to waste too much time grinding them up to a level on par with your characters.

Not only that but the new recruit’s Weapon and Masteries will also be developed to a certain point that also scales with the Weapons and Masteries of the rest of your characters. The image above should you you Narmaya’s Masteries when we recruited her at chapter 4. This saves you not only time but also resources as you won’t have to build the other aspects of your new character from scratch either! All in all, the game rewards you for building up your current roster one way or another, and won’t give you a hard time with building newcomers.

There you have it for Ally Characters in Granblue Fantasy: Relink! All in all, we think Cygames did a great job of translating aspects of their gacha-gaming roots, especially the character-heavy elements, into an Action RPG game. It was also an overall great decision to not lock new playable characters behind RNG the way gacha games normally would. Instead they’ve put the gacha elements onto aspects like improving getting higher-level Sigils and acquiring good Wrightstones to imbue onto your character’s Weapons.
