Kadokawa, the parent company of FromSoftware, suffers a ransomware attack and is currently working to address potential data leaks. It is not yet known if the developer of Elden Ring has been directly affected and many fans are worried about the banking data of their accounts.

Kadokawa Suffers a Ransomware Attack

This is not the first time a video game company has suffered a ransomware attack or hack. It happened in the past with Insomniac Games, leaking lots of details about Marvel’s Wolverine, and even with Rockstar Games, before they revealed official information about GTA 6.

Now it has happened to the Kadokawa Group, a major Japanese conglomerate. In case you are not familiar, they are the parent company of FromSoftware and Acquire, important developers in the industry.

According to Kadokawa’s official statement, the attack occurred on Thursday, June 27, and they have not yet assessed the full extent of the hack. The damage to the group’s internal studios, with FromSoftware being the most well-known, has not been determined either.

The Japanese company acknowledges that they are working on solutions while analyzing the damages caused by the attack. A lot of confidential data from Kadokawa Group could be exposed.

The Company is Working To Restore Normalcy

It seems that the medium most affected by the ransomware attack is NicoNico, a multimedia portal similar to YouTube, which is very important in Japan. Kadokawa acknowledges that services on Niconico have been inactive since June 8.

In the coming days, confidential details and private information about FromSoftware and their future projects could be revealed.

The group responsible for the attack claims to have stolen important data from the company, as well as from their work teams. This includes information about Kadokawa’s future projects and private data of the conglomerate’s employees.

Kadokawa is seeking solutions to restore Niconico’s servers and protect all its workers. The company has contacted external sources to assess the damages caused by the attack.

As we mentioned, it is unknown whether FromSoftware has been directly affected or not. Let us remember that Shadow of the Erdtree, the DLC for Elden Ring, has just been released.

Other subsidiaries that could be affected are Acquire, the developer of Tenchu, Way of the Samurai, and Octopath Traveler, or the entertainment portal Anime News Network.
