Bandai Namco today revealed Ashes of Ariandel, the first DLC for Dark Souls 3, is coming on October 25th, confirming leaked rumors of the expansion’s title and date. Players will find themselves steeped in a brand new environment filled with terrifying new enemies, challenges, and exciting lore to expand the overarching Dark Souls 3 storyline.

Ashes of Ariandel Details

Famitsu has published some detailed information of the game, as follows:

  • “In this installment, we will tell the story of a world where cold snow continuously falls. Guided by a mysterious person, who will the wandering players meet and fight in this world, and does “Ahes of Ariandel” hold a meaning?”
  • The circle that symbolizes the Way of White becomes a new miracle to tear at enemies. That circlet, almost like a boomerang, returns to its caster after being thrown. For those who learn its uses, it will surely provide a unique style.”
  • “An unstable rope bridge suspended across a steep valley. A belfry without a bell rises beyond the violently fluttering snow.”
  • “A world covered in freezing snow”. Unlike the pale-sun enveloped dying Lothric, this new world with its snow storms is the center of the DLC. What awaits players here?
  • Will players be able to explore this harsh world, that unlike Lothric presents fearsome storms and cold winds stopping your progress?
  • A new pvp mode: The Hollow Arena: A new entry in Dark Souls 3 multiplayer, and unlike invasion PvP, your skills will be tested against fierce opponents. Start training now!
  • “A spell that fires a cold storm. Fitting for a spell born in the setting of this installment, a cold snow world.”

  1. “Unkindled one, if you are like us, another forlorn soul, with no place to call your own, then show my lady flame.”

Yeah, this is definitely the Painted World of Ariamis. That bit about forlorn souls having nowhere else to go is on a couple of the Corvian weapons and the Painting Guardian stuff.

Maybe, assuming Ariamis based it off anywhere and didn’t just make it up entirely. But considering all the references to the Painted World in the base game, I can’t imagine it being anything else.

  2. Well this is definitely interesting.

Though, I wonder, it looks like Ariamis, but isn’t there the possibility of it being the place Ariamis was based off of rather then the Painted World itself? Which would also be pretty interesting.

  3. Watching the trailer, bowl guy is trying to beat you to death with it.

There also appears to be a misplaced Viking.

  4. I’ll include better translations with official screenshots / trailer in an upcoming article :)

  5. seems like its not an aoe but something akin to soul stream or fire surge dammit

i agree it seems like we are going to the painted world likely by using the piece of cloth presented by that man in red

i assume ariandel is the princess he speaks off

  6. Golden tray looks a lot like the Lord Vessel. Gwyn, is that you?

Red hood, as I said, seems like Ingward.

That’s who I was thinking too.

I want to know who the long whitehaired person is in the album.

It’d be really awesome if we returned to the Painted World.

  8. Based on the images, I’m guessing this DLC takes place in the Painted World of Ariamis. Fits with the previously mentioned ‘snow theme’ the DLC was said to have, DaS3 frequently mentions the area but it isn’t accessible, and in DaS1 the place was seemingly designed with PvP in mind (red soapstone was there, optional boss you could walk right past, fun and varied layout, circular arena-like area, and so on).

The new PvP mode sounds exactly like what I was hoping it would be, what with being based on invading. This is good to know.

There was an error, and apparently the DLC pvp mode is “different from invading”, not “based on invading”. It may just be a standard arena, then.
