Players will find themselves steeped in a brand new environment filled with terrifying new enemies, challenges, and exciting lore to expand the overarching Dark Souls 3 storyline.

Ashes of Ariandel Details

Famitsu has published some detailed information of the game, as follows:

  • “In this installment, we will tell the story of a world where cold snow continuously falls. Guided by a mysterious person, who will the wandering players meet and fight in this world, and does “Ahes of Ariandel” hold a meaning?”
  • The circle that symbolizes the Way of White becomes a new miracle to tear at enemies. That circlet, almost like a boomerang, returns to its caster after being thrown. For those who learn its uses, it will surely provide a unique style.”
  • “An unstable rope bridge suspended across a steep valley. A belfry without a bell rises beyond the violently fluttering snow.”
  • “A world covered in freezing snow”. Unlike the pale-sun enveloped dying Lothric, this new world with its snow storms is the center of the DLC. What awaits players here?
  • Will players be able to explore this harsh world, that unlike Lothric presents fearsome storms and cold winds stopping your progress?
  • A new pvp mode: The Hollow Arena: A new entry in Dark Souls 3 multiplayer, and unlike invasion PvP, your skills will be tested against fierce opponents. Start training now!
  • “A spell that fires a cold storm. Fitting for a spell born in the setting of this installment, a cold snow world.”

Based on the images, I’m guessing this DLC takes place in the Painted World of Ariamis. Fits with the previously mentioned ‘snow theme’ the DLC was said to have, DaS3 frequently mentions the area but it isn’t accessible, and in DaS1 the place was seemingly designed with PvP in mind (red soapstone was there, optional boss you could walk right past, fun and varied layout, circular arena-like area, and so on).

The new PvP mode sounds exactly like what I was hoping it would be, what with being based on invading. This is good to know.

There was an error, and apparently the DLC pvp mode is "different from invading", not "based on invading". It may just be a standard arena, then.

    Red hood? Ingward?

That’s who I was thinking too.

I want to know who the long whitehaired person is in the album.

It’d be really awesome if we returned to the Painted World.

Um, belfry shot looks like Ariamis 2.0 to me.

  5. Avatar Agurzil says:

Uhhhh, frost sorcery. I know my next build.

  6. Avatar TSMP says:

And that’s all of them. Let the speculation commence.

Golden tray looks a lot like the Lord Vessel. Gwyn, is that you?

Red hood, as I said, seems like Ingward.

  8. Avatar lordnoah says:

seems like its not an aoe but something akin to soul stream or fire surge dammit

i agree it seems like we are going to the painted world likely by using the piece of cloth presented by that man in red

i assume ariandel is the princess he speaks off

I’ll include better translations with official screenshots / trailer in an upcoming article 🙂

Looks like pestilent mercury, Frost addition.

Watching the trailer, bowl guy is trying to beat you to death with it.

There also appears to be a misplaced Viking.

Link to the trailer, if anyone missed it.

    Well this is definitely interesting.

Though, I wonder, it looks like Ariamis, but isn’t there the possibility of it being the place Ariamis was based off of rather then the Painted World itself? Which would also be pretty interesting.

  14. Avatar TSMP says:

"Unkindled one, if you are like us, another forlorn soul, with no place to call your own, then show my lady flame."

Yeah, this is definitely the Painted World of Ariamis. That bit about forlorn souls having nowhere else to go is on a couple of the Corvian weapons and the Painting Guardian stuff.

    Well this is definitely interesting.

Maybe, assuming Ariamis based it off anywhere and didn’t just make it up entirely. But considering all the references to the Painted World in the base game, I can’t imagine it being anything else.

thanks for the good work fex

The bigger question is why someone is bludgeoning us with the Lordvessel.

Oh, it could definitely be the Painted World, but I’m just saying there’s also other potential possibilities.

Either way it looks really awesome.

… also, why is an old guy self-flagellating and trying to kill us with the Lordvessel?

Oh, and I’m pretty sure the entrance will be the painting in the grand hall of Irithyll. The one that shows a rope bridge leading to a belfry. I need to verify my minds eye, but I’m pretty sure there’s a painting that depicts such a scene. Something close at least, anybody in game that can go snap a shot of those paintings?

  20. Avatar Anubis says:

some food for thought or my observations if you will: (actually, I might as well put a spoiler warning in here as well for some people that don’t want to speculate – wrong thread)

    1) Aria(!)ndel sounds strangely familiar to Aria(!)mis. The snow-covered level reminds me of this as well.

    2) the painted world of Ariamis was a place for souls who had nowhere to go because they were cast out. in the trailer the narrator says: "Unkindled one, if you are like us, another forlorn soul, with no place to call your own…"

    3) the voice also says "… then show my lady flame".

I conclude from this the following:

The "lady" the voice refers to is actually the mother of pyromancy / a chaos witch / the lost sinner (the sin being recreating the first flame, i.e. the chaos flame i.e. the profaned flame). The voice straight up reminded me of Eingyy or whatever he was spelled. A servant of the witches of Izalith and pyromancy.

Further evidence for this is the flame-starved area the "lady" is in. out of her frustration of having failed to recreate the first flame she seeks flame. that’s why she peers into the (essence of the soul als Vendrick did) soul vessel.

Some deep *ish* I think. If this is all actually true, kudos to FROM for linking everything like this!

Oh and Kudos to skarekrow, who deciphered the runes on the titanite slab and sensing a forthcoming "Ice/snow/cold"-era. That’s what actually might happen, when the flames die out. You seem to enter the DLC from the Untended Graves (it’s in the trailer near the end) where the flame is extinguished already.

Awesome stuff for further speculating ’til October!!! Lore-hunters and -speculators rejoice!

edit: by the what happened to my avatar?

  23. Avatar Agurzil says:

Why Cornyx? I don’t see the pyromancer lady anywhere, did you mean Ingward?

Cornyx is the DSIII pyromancy guy. Were you thinking of Quelana?

That flame breath is cool, though.
