World of Warcraft: Dragonflight Expansion Revealed; Will Add Dragonriding, New Class and More

Blizzard revealed today the new expansion that will be coming to the long-running MMORPG World of Warcraft called Dragonflight which will introduce a brand new class, race, dragonriding and more.

World of Warcraft: Dragonflight Expansion Revealed; Will Add Dragonriding, New Class and More

The next expansion for World of Warcraft was officially unveiled during Blizzard’s announcement live stream which was held today. Dragonflight was officially confirmed to be the next adventure for WoW players which sets to revolve around…yes you’ve guessed it dragons and dragonriding. The expansion sets to feature a brand new class/race combination called the Dracthyr Evoker, a new flying system called Dragonriding, a revamped talent system and the ability to advance all reputations simultaneously. The livestream also previewed new regions in Dragon Isles. The idea for advancing reputations simultaneously is so that players can gain Renown for the four different reputations coming with the Dragon Isles at the same time, making for a more alt-friendly system.

Dragon Isles

The Dragonflight trailer shows the events that caused the Dragon Isles to be hidden, making it undiscoverable. The land is protected by what appears to be stone guard people, but after many years the shrouding system that seems to protect the isles has stopped working. The cinematic shows an incoming storm, and glowing seas. The Dragon Isles isn’t actually a new concept for Blizz, as apparently it was planned quite some time ago, once upon a time part of vanilla WoW but was not included in the final version of the game. Dragonflight sets to bring a focus to this region along with the Dracthyr race.

New Race/Class Dracthyr Evoker

The new/class race Dracthyr Evoker will offer two class specialisations, a healer with a focus on green/bronze magic, while the ranged damage dealer will use red/blue magical abilities. As you can expect, the race takes on a dragon form but also has a more human form with draconic features. The combat form seems to be a dragon form, which could work similarly to how Worgens work, but no details were shared exactly about whether it’s vital to be in this form to fight.

A new mechanic coming to WoW will be the ability to ride dragons in a sort of “train your own dragon” feature. How is this different from flying mounts? The gameplay previewed a dragon barrel rolling, and deep-diving which is different from current flying in the MMO. The ability to ride dragons adds special moves, a special skill tree and the option to customise your Drakes appearance by taking on additional challenges. How integral the new system will be to the expansion is too soon to tell, but from the fact that the expansion is heavily focusing on dragons, it could offer some dailies or other feature dragon-themed content.

Other additions announced were changes coming to the standard UI, professions gaining request fulfilment, and a revamped talent system adding further class utility, plus specialisation trees gaining offensive/healing/tanking powers for all classes. A loadout system will also be introduced, making it much easier to switch spec talent tree without the use of add-ons. As per usual a new level cap which increases the max level to 70, new raid and dungeons will be coming with this expansion.
