The minds at Airship Syndicate (Darksiders Genesis and Ruined King) and Digital Extremes (Warframe) are hard at work at their upcoming MMO Action-RPG, Wayfinder. Originally teased back in The Game Awards 2022, the character-based title was given a cinematic trailer.

Now, we are given several glimpses of gameplay, thanks to this month’s State of Play.

Let’s Find the Wayfinder

Wayfinder is a third-person online multiplayer action game. It features an extremely lush and stylized art style that has bold and vibrant colors. It takes more of a cartoony style rather than realistic, which is something that Airship Syndicate is quite good at considering their previous works.

They have painstakingly created the fantasy/sci-fi world of Evenor, which has been plunged into chaos. The “Gloom” has begun to overtake the world. As a Wayfinder, you have the power to control this chaos and turn the tides against it.

Players will group up with friends to enter Lost Zones that have been ravaged by The Gloom. Since the game’s primary theme is chaos, The Gloom has the potential to change everything it comes into contact with – and that includes the environments themselves.

You wield a legendary item called the Gloom Dagger, which can control the chaos up to a certain degree. Players will use this to somewhat influence or customize the challenges that they want to face, such as adding mutators or modifiers to the dungeons they choose to enter.

Honey, I Shrunk the Wayfinders!

Players will be able to choose from different Wayfinders, which seem to be already predefined characters. Thus, they are fully voice-acted and already have established personalities as well as relationships with characters within the world. You can also swap Wayfinders (probably not on-the-fly) if you want to try out a different playstyle.

Those worrying about customization, however, need not worry. While the character may already be made out for us, we can fully customize the Wayfinder’s looks, abilities, and weapon loadouts. At the moment, five Wayfinders have been announced.

Niss the Shadow Dancer

First off is Wingrave, an Archon Templar. He specializes in frontline combat as well as supporting allies with shields and healing. Then we have Niss, the Shadow Dancer. She is the stealthy one of the group and can blink behind her enemies to cut them up with deadly precision.

We also have the weapon master Senja, who is comfortable with beating her foes to a pulp. Silo the Tactician offers a bit more finesse with bombs and other weapons of subterfuge. Last is Kyros, the Warmage who uses both blades and dark magic to smite The Gloom.

Closed Beta, Early Access, and Launch

Confirmed as well during the February 2023 State of Play were some specific dates of note. Coming quite soon is the Closed Beta, announced for February 28th. This will include players on both PlayStation 5 as well as PC. Interested parties may sign up for the beta on the game’s main webpage. You can also sign up directly on Steam.

Next is the game’s official Early Access launch, which will happen sometime in May of this year. While no specific date has been announced, it will open up the platforms to include the PlayStation 4 as well. Guaranteed Early Access will be given to players to choose to purchase a Founder’s Pack in order to support the game’s development.

It is also worth noting that the team does not intend to do any progress wipes for characters created in Early Access. So it looks like there will be a ton of seasoned Wayfinder finding themselves in the full release.

The Post-Launch Outlook

As it looks like Wayfinder is shaping up to be another free-to-play live service loot-focused title, it brings to question how the title will support itself post-launch. Content Seasons are one of the things that Airship Syndicate highlighted, which will include new Wayfinders, weapons, and areas. However, there is no word on whether this will be free or have paid elements to it.

The team did acknowledge though that they are working closely with Digital Extremes to create a fair monetization model. As such, everything that can be purchased in the cash shop will be earnable as well via playing regularly. They also wish to attain the high level of player trust and community building that DE has built up over the years.
