Valkyria Chronicles 4 is a tactical role-playing game both developed and published by Sega. Valkyria Chronicles 4 occurs during the same span as the original Valkyria Chronicles, however the story follows a new group of characters. A Captainless Squad is the second DLC content available for players (unless they have purchased the game through PSN.) This DLC comprises of 3 missions that nets players good experience, moderate quality weapons and a worthy challenge.

Valkyria Chronicles 4: S Rank A Captainless Squad Guide

This DLC content has 3 missions players must complete. To unlock the third mission, players must have taken out the hidden Ace located in the first 2 missions. The potential personnel able to be deployed are fixed. Below you find how to achieve for each mission the S Rank, starting with the Ace’s location.

Winter, 1935 EC. Squad E, traveling now aboard the snow cruiser Centurion, notices one day that rescue dog Ragnarok has gone missing. Feeling guilty for neglecting him, members of Squad E sneak out to find the lost pup.

Before long, though, they find themselves embroiled in a “picnic” of a decidedly unpastoral nature…

A Captainless Squad

Price: $4.99
Release Date: October 23, 2018
Prerequisite: Players must have completed Chapter 10 before they are able to undertake this mission.
Rewards: Completing this extra story mission unlocks certain weapons. This extra story mission can be accessed by going to Book Mode > Menu > Extra Stories.

S Rank A Sleuth of Bears Guide

The first mission in this DLC will be A Sleuth of Bears. Players must capture the enemy’s base camp, which is part of the primary victory conditions. However, once players get close enough to the camp they will run into Klaus Walz. The victory condition will then change to “3 Infantry units reach the target”.  Completing this mission is very straightforward, but players may miss the Ace hidden by the trucks to the West of the extraction zone. Players will have to take out the enemy Ace to obtain the third mission of this DLC.

The conditions for this mission are:

Victory

The enemy base camp is captured

3 Infantry units reach the target (When players stumble on the Vulcan)

Failure

20 turns passed

If any allied foot soldier is killed

The enemy occupies your base camp.

All allied infantry fall in action

Team Composition

The mandatory personnel for this mission are:

Mission

Turn 1: Start the mission by moving your Scout Leader with 2 Shocktroopers towards the patch of grass to find and eliminate the Engineer hiding. Position the Scout Leader and the Shocktroopers near the left side of the gatling gun. This will put your Scout in low health so be cautious.

Use one of the Shocktroopers to take out the gatling gun and take the Northernmost route. Continue on this path with your Shocktrooper and use his flamethrower to take out the Trooper Elite hiding in the grass. Position yourself behind the enemy’s Grenadier and Sniper. Use 2 more command points on that Shocktrooper to ambush the Grenadier and the Sniper. Make sure to crouch behind the sandbags to lessen the damage the unit will most likely receive during the enemy’s turn.

Move Neige towards your Scout Leader and snipe the Scout Elite up in the watchtower. Eventually Neige should be up there but for now, have her crouch behind a sandbag. Move another Scout towards your Leader Scout and take out the Trooper Elite that should have his back turned, allowing for a surprise attack. Have Conner blast any enemy Trooper unit.

Turn 2: Start this turn by having Connor blast several more Trooper and Scout units to their demise, to secure a safe route for later in the mission. Move Neige to the Sniper tower and take out any Trooper Elite she can target. While you have Hanna to take out the tanks, players can elect to shoot the Ragna-Crate to 1 shot the tank near Neige’s watchtower.

Command Hanna to shoot the remaining tank and position her near your Leader Scout. Have your Leader Scout command Hanna and another unit to make your way towards the East side of the tank near the grass. There will be an enemy Scout tucked in the grass. Move those troops towards the South end of the tank and finish the tank off using Hanna. End your turn here as you will be out of command points.

Turn 3: Start this turn by moving your Shocktrooper (that was stationed by the sandbags in turn 1) South towards the enemy’s base camp. This will prompt a cutscene and change the victory condition once you end that unit’s action. Use your Scout Leader to command Hanna plus the other unit and take them near the extraction point but don’t leave yet. Solitary Zahl is hiding behind the trucks and must be eliminated to unlock the third mission of this DLC extra story. Use a Shocktrooper’s flamethrower to quickly defeat him. Move your 3 units to the extraction point to finish this mission and receive your S Rank.

S Rank Snowball Fight Guide

The second mission in this DLC will be Snowball Fight. Players must have 4 infantry units reach the designated extraction point, as part of the primary victory conditions. However, players will have to avoid the alluring and deadly Crymaria, the Winter Witch. Completing this mission will be very difficult as Crymaria can easily 1 shot units and players may miss the Ace hidden behind an ice shelf in the Northeastern portion of the map. Players will have to take out the enemy Ace to obtain the third mission of this DLC.

The conditions for this mission are:

Victory

4 Infantry units reach the target 

Failure

20 turns passed

If any allied foot soldier is killed

All allied infantry fall in action

Team Composition

Mission

Crymaria is a powerful magical Grenadier with massive range and damage. She can cover great distances and be a major hassle to deal with during this mission. The best way I found to handle Crymaria is to split your troops into 2 groups and have one move South then East-ward, while the other heads East and then South. Make sure you use the overhang covers to negate Crymaria’s attacks. Below you will find a step-by-step for each of your turns and for Crymaria’s.

Turn 1: Start the mission by moving Hanna towards the tank located South of where your units are spawned. If you are lucky you can 1 shot the tank if you can get the right angle. If not, just use another command point on Hanna. Move Rosetta towards Hanna so she can toss a grenade at the crouching Trooper Elite.

Have your Scout Leader command Simon and Zaiga, then move inside the ice cavern to take out the lone Trooper Elite stationed there. The Scout Leader will be greatly injured so you can leave her behind some ice walls or near a sandbag.  Simon should be able to move and capture the enemy’s base once he uses the flamethrower to eliminate the Trooper Elite protecting the base. Make sure Simon is crouching behind a sandbag.

Have Connor advance diagonally towards the enemy’s base to eliminate the enemy’s Grenadier Elite. Then take out a Trooper Elite as you continue to move towards the camp. Move towards Zaiga’s position and blast a Scout away.

Advance Zaiga East taking out the enemy’s Scout and finish his turn behind some sandbags near an enemy’s Lancer. Take out the Lancer then end Zaiga’s turn in the far East of the Map, as he will be able to fight the Ace tucked in the ice shelf.

Crymaria’s Turn 1: Crymaria will start her advance towards any troop left out in the open or towards your spawn camp. She has about a 33.33%  chance of selecting to attack to the far West, spawn base or attack central East. For my encounter she attacked Simon first located in the central part of the map. Luckily I placed him behind a sandbag and an Iron overhang to protect against Grenadier shots. She then turn towards my spawn camp and destroyed Neige that I left outside to test. Usually the enemy’s Lancers may advance and attack your troops that have taken over their camp during this turn.

Turn 2: For this turn we want to thin out the enemies numbers of troops while you continue to advance in 2 groups. Also while it may be tempting to move a troop along the East wall towards the Gatling machine, but this one will turn to shoot the unit while getting cover fire by the nearby tank.

Start this turn by moving Rosetta towards the ice shelf near Hanna’s location. Have her end up under the shelf to protect her if Crymaria targets her during the next phase. If any units are down send Rita to revive them if she is able to. Have Simon attack the nearby Lancer unit that most likely advanced towards him. Keep him at the camp if its unsafe to advance. Use Zaiga’s grenade and flamethrower to take out Valiant Condor, the Ace of this mission.

Crymaria’s Turn 2: Crymaria will the turn around and focus her attention on Rosetta at the South West location. The tanks will advance during this phase, but if all your troops are under overhangs and behind sandbags they should survive.

Turn 3: I suggest to avoid the tanks as you only have 1 Lancer and they can only move so far. Wipe out more enemies on the populated side, while the open side should have troops advancing.

Since Crymaria moves back to attack Rosetta, this allows me to clear the Eastern path with Connor. Connor should be able to eliminate the Grenadier Elite, Trooper Elite and the Scout Elite. If he needs ammo, have Rita restock him or have him attack the furthest enemies, while Simon can clean up the ones close by. Move Hanna closer to the Crevasse/ice shelf where Rosetta was taken out. If you have more able troops, move them towards Hanna, if not then end your turn to get more command points the following turn.

Crymaria’s Turn 3: Crymaria will turned around and focuse her attention now on Simon and Connor, they are located at the central camp location. This will allow advancement through the Southeast. If you need to revive Rosetta, move your Engineer towards your Leader Scout, then have the Leader Scout command them to follow. With the Scout high action points, they should reach the ice shelf quickly.

Turn 4: Move Hanna towards the left of the Crevasse to reach a Gatling gun and destroy it. Have Hanna sneak attack the Trooper Elite that is crouching behind the sandbag. Try to aim for the body as we want the sandbag to be destroyed in the process and this will minimize missing your shot. End Hanna’s turn quickly to avoid being sprayed with bullets.

Have Rita revive Rosetta and move closer to the bottom wall without being shot. If you are uneasy just end the turn after reviving. Command Rosetta to shoot the weaken Trooper Elite that should still be looking at Hanna and move towards the extraction point. Take out the Lancer and remaining Trooper Elite with any troops of your liking but attempt to eliminate them and end up at the extraction point. Hopefully you get 3 in the point with Neige hiding in the Crevasse who should be the 4th during the next turn.

Crymaria’s Turn 4: Crymaria is still focusing her attention on Simon and Connor at the central camp location at this point. This will allow advancement through the Southeast. The remaining tanks will be more active following troops, but they should remain in their locations as they are safe there.

Turn 5: Move the remaining troops that is near the point towards the extraction point to finish this mission and receive your S Rank.

S Rank The Price of a Picnic Guide

The third mission in this DLC will be The Price of a Picnic. Players must capture the enemy’s base camp. This mission is definitely a challenging one to victor, as players will have to fight against Claude, Kai, Minerva, Raz, and Riley along with other lesser units. They also need to have 4 infantry units reach the designated extraction point, as part of their primary victory conditions. To unlock this mission, players must have defeated the 2 Aces in the previous missions.

The conditions for this mission are:

Victory

The enemy base camp is captured

Failure

The enemy occupies your base camp

20 turns passed

All allied infantry fall in action

Team Composition

The mandatory personnel for this mission are:

Squad E’s Leaders & Health

  • Raz: 900 HP
  • Kai: 420 HP
  • Minerva: 500 HP
  • Riley: 380 HP
  • Claude’s Hafen 6500 HP 

Mission

Claude, Kai, Minerva, Raz, and Riley will be a huge hassle to deal with in this mission. Claude and Minerva have the capacity to issue orders, while Kai, Minerva, Raz, and Riley all have insane life pools and sublime dodge/evade abilities. This will make standard attacks miss more often, so use items with better accuracy and that can result in chip damage even if they avoid it. Examples of these include:

  • Grenades
  • Flamethrowers
  • Grenadiers’ mortars 

Below you will find the a step-by-step for each of your turns as well as the now enemy Squad E:

Turn 1: Start the mission deploying your Scout Leader, Simon and Zaiga. Command the Shocktroopers to follow you and shoot the Ragna-crate on the right side of the bridge. Take that path, climb the 2 ladders to run parallel to the enemies.

Have one of the Shocktroopers advance towards the camp taking out the enemy’s Trooper Elite. Then using another command point take out the Sniper Elite and capture the camp. Finish that command point by positioning the Shocktrooper on the right side of the map.  Move him once more to take out a Sniper Elite and look at the Scout Elite to finish him during the enemy’s turn.

Move your Scout Leader towards the recently captured camp and shoot the Ragna-crate opening up another path to travel. Deploy Rosetta from this new camp.

Squad E’s Turn 1: Raz will locate your Shocktrooper and attempt to defeat him. Hopefully he survives this attack.

Turn 2: Have Azusa move towards the path where you destroyed the Ragna-crate last phase as this path takes you behind Raz allowing your Scout to shoot him without him retaliate. Be careful not to stray too far from the right wall as Kai is protecting Raz. Position Azusa near the truck located nearby the second camp.

Then have Simon finish off Raz from behind and place him near the second base. Using another command point, eliminate the Trooper Elite protecting the camp then capture it. Simon should also defeat the Sniper Elite at the base of the hill.

Send Rosetta towards Simon and Azusa and use Ragnaid on whoever is closest to her to avoid just advancing on a command point. Use Azusa’s command ability to bring Rosetta and Simon with her to assault Kai from behind in a surprise attack. This should eliminate her using 1 command point. I chose to leave Simon at the second camp since he was heavily injured and to have a fail safe in case I was aggressively attack on the following turn.

Advance Azusa and position her under the metal overhangs to negate Riley’s mortars. Take out the Lancer Elite that stationed nearby. Deploy Connor and Neige from the second base to assist in taking over the third base on the following turn. I pass my turn in order to have more CP next turn.

Squad E’s Turn 2: Minerva will use her command order to take with her Riley and a Lancer Elite. She attacked for me Simon at the second camp then headed towards the initial camp I took over. Luckily I left Zaiga there in case of this. Riley will then set up in the second camp and most likely if you left a unit in the second camp they will be defeated.

Turn 3: Advance Zaiga so he can attack Minerva with a grenade or flamethrower. This may burn 2-3 command points if Minerva dodges well. Move Zaiga towards the second camp and defeat Riley. Snipe the Lancer on the bridge with Neige and position her near the third camp.

Have Rosetta advance deep towards the third camp eliminating the Scout Elite by blowing up the Ragna-crate. Rosetta should be able to capture the camp using the same command point. Move Connor towards Azusa and take out one of the crouching Trooper Elites near the left wooden area. Use Azusa’s command ability to bring Connor and Neige with you and take out the remaining crouch enemy near the base. Deploy Rita from the closest camp from a down unit.

Squad E’s Turn 3: If you been taking out Squad E’s leaders, Claude will issue the Rapid Deployment order bringing back the defeated Leaders.

Turn 4: Use Rita to revive your fallen unit or if everyone is healthy, proceed to shoot the Ragna-crate near the Southwestern part of the map near the third camp. Send Rosetta to the enemy’s final camp, hug the Hafen’s side and toss a grenade towards Riley. Have Connor move towards towards the third camp and ensure he takes cover to avoid death. Deploy Hanna from the third camp to have her available for the next turn

Use Azusa’s command ability to bring 2 fellow units with her to the final camp. (Hopefully the ladder movement bug doesn’t impede your progress like it did me. Whether its intended or not, sometimes the Leader unit the player is using isn’t in place first after the load, thus being body blocked by the AI.) So lets say that happens to you, just try to move up as much as possible after shooting another Ragna-crate.

Squad E’s Turn 4: At this point, Claude and the other Leaders will stay in this camp. It will mostly be the Elite Grenadier and Kai who will attempt to shoot you.

Turn 5: Players can advance Connor so he is in range of Minerva and Raz in order to attack them. If he can’t, have Rosetta blow up Riley with a grenade and go behind the metal overhand to end up crouching behind a sandbag. This will make Minerva and possibly Raz look at that direction. Hopefully now Connor can rain mortars on them. Restock him with Rita if needed. Alternatively, players can elect to use their Scout, Engineer, and Shocktrooper to continue tossing grenades at Minerva and Raz.

Move Hanna closer so she may shoot the Hafen. This may take a while depending on Hanna’s weapon and where you are aiming. Hitting the blue radiator which is the weakspot should be a one shot and the body should typically be 3 shots needed.

Players have up to 7 turns to finish this mission to obtain the S Rank.
