Microsoft

  • In a recent report by Bloomberg, Microsoft seems to have approached a few different Japanese studios in order to add new developers to their Xbox Game Studios.
  • The report states that these are several small and big Japanese studios, as they have confirmed that they have been discussing with Microsoft in joining the Xbox family. No reveals of outcomes have been shared as of yet, but this could be an interesting move for Microsoft.
  • This isn’t the first time Microsoft has been trying to attract some Japanese developers, previously they had extended offers to Platinum Games (known for such titles as Nier Automata) to join Xbox Game Studios but were not successful in their negotiations.
  • This would also secure more of a Xbox fan base in Japan, it is the “second-largest market after the U.S.”
  • However, in a recent interview with Xbox head Phil Spencer this week, he says as far as he know, there hasn’t been any talks with new Japanese studios to acquire them, but continuing their relationship with those they work with.

Bloodborne

  • Playstation 5 released this week a certain regions, along with it came news of backwards compatibility.
  • If you’re planning to dive back into old favourites such as Bloodborne, be wary as the framerate is still locked at 30FPS according to Lance McDonald who is an avid data miner and content creator who has focused on many FromSoftware games.
  • In order for Bloodborne to run at 60FPS it would need a much needed update. However Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice and Dark Souls 3 can run at 60FPS. The reason Bloodborne cannot run any higher is that the developers haven’t released further updates and the game was designed to be locked at 30.
  • Will FromSoftware release a patch for Bloodborne on PS5 soon? The odds are slim as they are already busy working on their next game Elden Ring, which was confirmed to still be in the works recently.

Scarlet Nexus

  • For the celebration of the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S launch this week, Microsoft held a live stream which showed 10 minutes of upcoming Scarlet Nexus. It featured female protagonist Kasane Randall. Scarlet Nexus is in development for Playstation 5, Xbox Series X, Playstation 4, Xbox One and PC.
  • It also featured the hideout, a hub area where characters can relax, give gifts to allies to increase Bonds as well as strengthen abilities which can be borrowed from the other characters.
  • The game is designed with an urban cityscape, inspired by 90s Japan but with a neo-futuristic twist. The gameplay also featured combat with Kasane and new party members. It also teased cosmetic accessories.
  • Scarlet Nexus promises to be a fast-paced game with RPG elements, similar to NieR Automata but with more Code Vein visuals in terms of art style. If you want to know more of what we think about the game, check out our Scarlet Nexus Gameplay Preview: More Nier Automata Than Code Vein.

Genshin Impact

  • The latest update for the online Action-RPG Genshin Impact went live this week adding a number of new additions for exploring, plus a brand new storyline quest.
  • One of the major additions was the introduction of City Reputation System. Why is this update highly anticipated? Well it will add a number of new things to do and will make exploration much easier. Previously tracking down stray Oculus Elements were a hassle, but with the new addition of blueprints, it will add a number of craftable items that can help make exploring that much more enjoyable.
  • The new City Reputation system allows a player’s main character to to earn Reputation by completing requests from NPCs. The more requests you complete, the more reputation you will earn, unlocking a number of Reputation Rewards. Rewards range from blueprints for gadgets that make exploring easier to cosmetic rewards such as new Azure Wind glider.
  • There have also been a number of improvements to UI, plus the addition of Condensed Resin which will allow you gain 2 sets at a time for Ley Line Blossoms and Domains.

Elden Ring

  • A recent interview with Xbox Head Phil Spencer on Gamespot, Spencer has not only revealed that they have seen Elden Ring, the upcoming dark fantasy RPG by FromSoftware, but has actually played the game. When asked exactly how much he had seen of the elusive game, he said “I’ve seen actually quite a bit. I’ve played quite a bit.”
  • Of course details from the interview are rather thin, as there is a lot he cannot share. We haven’t seen anything since the teaser reveal of Elden Ring. But Spencer has shared that compared to Hidetaka Miyazaki’s previous games, this is “the most ambitious game that he’s done”.
  • Spencer was also asked about George R.R. Martin who has been lending his literary talents to write the mythos and lore behind Elden Ring. According to Spencer the open world game will have open-ended areas, more so than previous FromSoftware titles.

Baldur’s Gate 3

  • In an interview with IGN, founder of Larian Studios Swen Vincke shared player outcomes and feedback when it came Baldur’s Gate 3. The game released in Early Access this year, but many have taken the plunge to purchase the game and give their feedback while it is in EA.

  • As the game stands currently, Baldur’s Gate 3 relies purely on RNG when is comes to dice rolls, something they have decided for the initial release in early access. How have players reacted? Well according to Vincke they’re pretty frustrated over the outcomes, at least those who haven’t been blessed with much luck.

  • But according to this interview help is underway, Larian are planning to add a little more sway, to help those who are getting some bad luck. If you’re someone who prefers to leave it completely up to fate, don’t worry as they will keep the full RNG option, and they’ll even test these two systems again in EA to see which one should be the default.
  • One thing that Larian has learnt about players is that they’re quite evil, Vincke shared “I can see how many people slept with Minthara. That’s quite large, and to get there you have to be evil. There’s certainly people that have had no moral scruples.”
  • Baldur’s Gate 3 is currently in Early Access on Steam and Stadia. If you’re wondering whether jumping into Early Access is right for you, you should check out Baldur’s Gate 3 Early Access First Impressions: Should You Get BG3 EA?.
