This week was Gamescom and we have a lot of RPG news go through. There were quite a few trailers and updates for games, so get comfortable as we round up some of the top RPG news.
Stray Blade
- Stray Blade a fantasy action-adventure RPG got a closer look at crafting as well as progression systems this week.
- Although it is not as in-depth, they do provide us with an overview of what’s to come as we explore the forgotten valley of Acrea. From forging swords to gathering materials, you will not run out of things to do to enhance your character’s capabilities.
- The trailer introduces crafting aspects of the game, which will require players to scour the land for materials. As you explore, you can unlock chests and gear from slaying enemies. There is a chance of gaining a blueprint which will provide further gear to craft.
- Character progression can be attained by enhancing your weapons and unlocking attributes. Improving your combat means mastering different weapons in turn unlocking special attacks with Skill Tree Attributes.
- Stray Blade will be released in 2023 for PC, Playstation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.

Forspoken
- Forspoken got a 10-minute gameplay video which showed off the open world RPG. Forspoken follows a teenage girl, Frey, as she is mysteriously transported into a fantasy kingdom only known as Athia. Her only companion is a golden magical cuff that has attached itself to her wrist.
- We are introduced to three notable areas in the newest Forspoken gameplay footage. First is Cipal, the only safe haven for humanity and the only friendly city that Frey will be able to visit. Just like any RPG, this city will be the major hub that Frey will return to, and will have many useful services and quest givers.
- Next is Praenost, a wide open landscape that looks more like a desert. And finally Avolet, a once lush forest.
- Gameplay features were revealed such as the Corrupted Monuments. Once proud places of worship to deities lay in shambles, especially in Avolet. Clearing them of their curse will grant Frey some powerful passive upgrades, such as permanent increases to her maximum health.
- As for exploring the world, Frey can use a grappling-hook style spell that will help her latch onto and propel herself towards ledges and other floating objects. She can even surf on massive icicles that she creates.
- Forspoken is just one of the games to look forward to next year, releasing on January 24 for PC and PS5.

Warhammer 40K Darktide
- We got footage for Warhammer 40,000 Darktide, featuring gameplay of the upcoming first-person shooter and hack and slash RPG. Set on the planet of Atoma Prime, dark agents of Nurgle, the Chaos God of Pestilence and Decay, have begun their invasion of the Hive City.
- Warhammer 40K: Darktide’s levels will be more interactive than their previous game in terms of the minigames they are planning to introduce. Alongside this, you can expect to be shoved into frantic circumstances, often involving heavy firefights.
- Developer Fatshark is set on making sure players will have further player agency this time around, especially when it comes to customisable characters. Customization starts with creating your convict, a prisoner of a crime of your choosing. It also seems that the character’s initial sentence will determine some of the starting cosmetics, such as the Dereliction of Duty, giving you immediate access to a Yellow Prison Suit.
- Players can choose from classes Ogryns, Zealots, Psykers and Veterans. Darktide will feature a simple loadout system, consisting of a Primary Weapon, a Secondary Weapon, and three Gadgets. There will also be a shop that uses in-game currency only. Darktide will be implementing what they are calling a “Hybrid Combat System”, with the use of both melee and ranged gameplay.
- Warhammer 40k Darktide will be releasing on November 30th for PC via Steam.

Where Winds Meet
- As for new game announcements, one of them was the Chinese fantasy open-world RPG Where Winds Meet.
- This new title had an impressive gameplay and cinematic trailer that ran for a few minutes. The footage seen so far looks like a healthy mix between Assassin’s Creed, Ghost of Tsushima, and Red Dead Redemption 2.
- Where Winds Meet is an open-world RPG at its core. The game features tons of exploration into a wide world set in the tail-end of the Ten Kingdoms era. The actual gameplay footage is about 2 minutes in length. We are greeted by a bustling ancient city filled to the brim with wandering merchants, peasants, and guards.
- Our protagonist is revealed to be able to climb walls and mountains but at the same time seemingly levitate dozens of feet in the air. They can also walk on water, which we can see later, makes invading enemy ships quite a breeze.
- Their dodges create a whirlwind of energy, and they have supernatural speed and agility that allows them to wall run and even run up ship masts. Concentrating will also let them slow down time and carefully aim with their bow for maximum damage. All good stuff.
- Where Winds Meet doesn’t have an official release date just yet. We do know that the game is currently only planned for a PC release.

Atlas Fallen
- Atlas Fallen is a new action adventure RPG from the developers of The Surge was also revealed. This new game features a ton of sand-based powers and combat. It promises to bring us mythical beings, corrupted gods, shape-shifting weapons, and a whole lot of sand.
- In the footage shown you can see the gods themselves walking the lands of Atlas Fallen, living in peace and harmony with humanity. Their mutual respect for mankind was so great, in fact, that mortal heroes are said to have walked with these deities. However, as time went on, this bond waned as the gods’ vanity grew. Mankind was cast aside as the immortal beings squabbled with one another, resulting in corruption.
- Atlas Fallen’s Gamescom Opening Night trailer featured primarily cinematics with small snippets of gameplay. While actual in-game footage was brief, the cinematics themselves revealed a lot of what we can expect from this upcoming action RPG.
- Featuring a whole lot of sand magic, characters are seen fixing a bridge, and being attacked by sand beasts. Weapon shifting will also be a large feature of the game. While braving the onslaught, the character swipes and strikes with his sword. However, he can also transform the blade into a massive whip, giving him a bit of a range advantage over his foes.
- The game is expected to release sometime in 2023, and is available for pre-order for $59.99 USD.

Lie of P
- Gamescoms gave a new trailer during Opening Night Live for Lies of P. The Action-RPG is based on the tale of Pinocchio written by Carlo Collodi, but gets a new twist with the main character who uses a mechanical arm to fight and explore the decaying city.
- The new trailer does reveal some of the gameplay including some of the uses of the prosthetic arm, which shows P or Pinocchio firing a gun-like attachment, as well as ripping doors off safes. Safe to say, the arm has a number of uses in the game which kind of reminds me of another souls-like coming our way, Steelrising.
- But P only seems to have an arm for customisation and wields another weapon in their right hand. P is seen wielding swords, mauls and even uses his left hand to unleash bolts of electricity using the Legion: Fulminis as he takes down mechanical monstrosities.
- What do you think of the latest trailer? Let us know in the comments below. Lies of P will be released on PC, Playstation 4, Playstation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One and Xbox Game Pass in 2023.

Wyrdsong
- Wyrdsong a fantasy open-world RPG was unveiled during Opening Night Live. The title is being worked on by a studio made up of veterans from Obsidian and Bethesda under Something Wicked Games. The team have worked on major game series such as The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, Dragon Age: Inquisition, The Outer Worlds and more.
- The game is based on a fictional version of Portugal, set in the middle ages. Not many details were given but what we do know is the game sets to have a fully customisable main character, with full-fledged RPG mechanics such as combat and questing.
- The trailer doesn’t give too much away story-wise, but we do get a sense of an ominous presence with “The Eye” which seems to encompass the land. It’s very fantasy based, but also inspired by history with a semi-mythological influence of Templar knights according to a recent interview with Polygon.
- Wyrdsong currently has no release date but is being developed using Unreal Engine 5.

The Lords of the Fallen
- We got a first look at The Lords of the Fallen, a reboot of the 2014 title. The Action-RPG soulslike got a cinematic trailer, set a thousand years after the events of the first game.
- The upcoming title will have tactical combat, more fast and fluid, with the use of spells and character buffs from magic. There will be both a single player and co-op campaigns, so you can team up with a friend to face the Rhodan army and Adyr.
- The Lords of the Fallen will be released on Playstation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC. No release date has been announced but a full gameplay reveal is slated for later this year.
- We released a video with our first impressions of the trailer, so you want to go into more detail you should check out that video on our Youtube channel.
