Welcome to the Top 5 Upcoming RPGs of December 2021! In this series, we highlight the Top 5 RPGs for the upcoming month. In this edition, we’re going to take a look at each of the titles, talk a little about each, and then explain why we think they deserve to be on the list. So join me now and find a mixture of some hidden gems and old favorites given a shiny new coat of paint.

Top 5 Upcoming RPGs Of December 2021

It’s the last month of the year, as 2021 draws to a close we still have one more list of Top RPGs to throw your way. So whether you’ll be sipping that mulled wine or finding other ways to get into the festive cheer, sit back while we unravel some great games releasing this month. Last month there were a couple of reshuffles when it came to releases, it’s just the type of year we’ve been having, but not to fear as we’ve rounded up some more titles to consider before the year is out.

This month we have a couple of expansions not only coming to a galaxy far, far away, but also one that’s been slowly getting to the END of its ultimate story. Prepare to put on your mecha suit, journey your way through a dungeon crawler labyrinth or pick your favourite mercenaries for the job, as we take you through the last RPG rundown of 2021, with the Top RPGs of December 2021.

Honourable Mention – Final Fantasy XIV Endwalker

Release Date: December 7th, Early Access December 3rd

Platform: PC, Playstation 5, Playstation 4

Developer: Square Enix

Publisher: Square Enix

The critically acclaimed MMORPG Final Fantasy XIV Endwalker makes our honourable mention this month, as the expansion got delayed by a couple of weeks, moving the launch to December 7th and December 3rd for pre-order early access. Since this title made our top spot last month, but as it’s now a December release, we thought it worth the mention.

Endwalker is the next entry in the long-running MMORPG, bringing the conclusion to the tale of Hydaelyn and Zodiark, a story that has spanned over many years. In this latest addition, players will unravel the mysteries and hopefully conquer. Endwalker will feature two new jobs Reaper who specialises in scythe-swinging melee DPS for close-quarter combat, and can call on an avatar from the Void. There will also be the new Sage job, a healer who wields a barrier heal, the fourth healer to be added to the game.

Two new zones will be introduced Garlemald and the Moon…yes THE MOON, as well as new raids and dungeons. The expansion also raises the level cap to 90 and introduces a male version of Viera. You can expect battle mechanics, new challenges and a story that will hopefully blow fans away, containing more story and cutscenes compared to the Shadowbringers expansion.

Final Fantasy XIV: Endwalker will release on December 7th, with early access available for those who pre-order on December 3rd. Coming to PC, Playstation 5, and Playstation 4.

5. Demon Gaze EXTRA

Release Date: December 9th

Platform: Playstation 4 and Switch

Developer: Clouded Leopard Entertainment

Publisher: NIS America

The worldwide release of Demon Gaze EXTRA arrives this month, which will support English and Japanese audio. Demon Gaze was the original title that was originally released in Japan in 2013 and overseas in 2014 on PS Vita. Demon Gaze EXTRA retains the original flavour of the game but adds enhanced graphics and new elements for a refreshed experience.

The title explores the region of Misrid, where players will uncover unique labyrinths not only above ground, but underground and even underwater. This dungeon-crawler will feel even more realistic with its remastered graphics and even more varieties of dungeons than before.

Embark upon a journey with a group of characters while hunting down demons, android-like creatures that have suddenly come to Misrid. Summon your very own demons in battle with the Open Demon command. Discover an all-new job category Machina which unlocks mid-game. You can also obtain unique items after clearing the story and through subsequent playthroughs, plus use the new item synthesis feature to customise legendary equipment.

Demon Gaze EXTRA comes to Playstation 4, and Switch worldwide on December 9th.

4. Wolfstride

Release Date: December 7th

Platform: PC

Developer: OTA IMON Studios

Publisher: Raw Fury

Described as an “immature grown-up RPG” that follows three troublemakers that just trying to get through a giant-mecha tournament. This trio of former partners in crime are trying to turn over a new leaf, when they gain a junkyard mecha called Cowboy. Teaming up together they enter the planet’s most elite mecha competition.

Each member of the team brings their own special experience that will help outwit their opponents. All seems to be going well but a simple mission to make money turns out to be much more complicated than first thought, as their dark choices from their past start to catch up with them, and their inevitable fate.

Explore the dark corners of Rain City, with a number of questionable establishments with quirky characters to meet. Jump into the arena to duke it out, one giant robot at a time in turn-based battles which rewards your preparation and strategy. The black and white aesthetic adds to the stylish 2D artstyle which mixes pixel design and comic book styled scenes.

Wolfstride punches its way through to Steam on December 7th.

3. Wartales

Release Date: December 1st (Early Access)

Platform: PC

Developer: Shiro Games

Publisher: Shiro Unlimited

Tactical RPG Wartales release on Early Access this month, bringing the medieval open-world RPG PC via Steam. Wartales is set nearly a century after the Great Plague, where the Edoran Empire has been ravaged by death and its inhabitants struggle for survival. Feudal lords remain in power of the territories, while villagers have little faith left, distrusting their neighbours and trying to save what little they have left. A growing number of mercenaries and sellswords become abundant as they stay loyal to whoever has the money to pay them.

Described as “an expansive low-fantasy world”, players will embark into dangerous work as part of the Warband, taking jobs for the right price. Visit taverns, farms, and duchies across the Edoran Empire, searching for the right people to help grow your band of mercenaries. This means you can customise your party members including their stats, equipment, and class specialisation, while you face the onslaught of monstrous creatures and fight brigands that lurk by the roadside.

Choose from melee-focuses Brutes, ranged Archers, devious Thieves and more to create a balanced team of fighters, in this turn-based combat title. Use your earnings to improve the members of your troop, through cooking replenishing meals, upgrading equipment, and spending experience on new abilities and professions before shelling out for the weekly wages.

Wartales comes to PC via Early Access on Steam on December 1st.

2. Spellforce 3 Reforced

Release Date: December 6th (consoles March 8th 2022)

Platform: PC (Consoles March 8th 2022)

Developer: Grimlore Games

Publisher: THQ Nordic

Offering an enhanced version of the original game, Spellforce 3 Reforced comes not only with visual improvements but better user interface, gamepad support and new content. Combining RTS with RPG, players can create their own hero and raise their own army to fight mass battles.

Reforced adds a whole new mode called Journey mode which adds 20 hours of additional content that can be played in co-op mode also. Your hereos acquired in this mode will be available in Journey Skirmish mode, letting you face other players.

Another new mode is Arena mode, adding a further way to challenge yourself. Giving you a fresh character to face an onslaught of waves of monsters. Complete with other players through leaderboards, or play in co-op. What’s also great is that those who already own the original Spellforce 3 will receive a free update for Reforced on PC.

Spellforce 3 Reforced is coming to PC on December 6th. Console versions PS4, PS5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S are delayed to March 8th 2022.

1. Star Wars: The Old Republic – Legacy of the Sith

Release Date: December 14th [UPDATE – Delayed to February 15th 2022]

Developer: Bioware

Publisher: EA

Taking our top spot this month is the latest expansion for Star Wars: The Old Republic called Legacy of the Sith. This new addition is the eighth expansion, coming with new features, locations and abilities. This also includes new combat styles, a return to Manaan and new horror-inspired Operation and Flashpoint events.

Sending players to the planet Manaan, you’re on a mission to find out what Darth Malgus is up to. Returning story characters Tau Idair, Arn Peralun, Major Anri, Lana Beniko, and Darth Rivix will all be a part of this tale.

The Legacy of the Sith arrives at the same time as an update which will bring a new combat style system, allowing players to choose combat abilities of different classes from level one. This changes the previous system which would require having to wait to level 10 and unlock an advanced class.

Star Wars: The Old Republic – Legacy of the Sith will launch on PC on December 14th 2021. [UPDATE – Will now release on February 15th 2022]
