Welcome to the Top Upcoming RPGs of May 2019! In this series we highlight the Top 5 RPGs for the upcoming month. In this edition, we’re going to take a look at each of the titles, talk a little about each, and then explain why we think they deserve to be on the list. So join me now and find a mixture of some hidden gems and old favorites given a shiny new coat of paint.
Top 5 Upcoming RPGs of May 2019
As we make our way further into 2019, there are some new titles launching and ones that are expanding their world. Last month was home to a few older titles gaining new platforms, the top spot went to the Dragon’s Dogma which landed on the Switch. This month focuses on some tactical, strategy and medieval influences. So without further ado, let’s get into the month of May!
Honourable Mention – Kingdom Come: Deliverance A Woman’s Lot DLC
Release Date: May 28th
Platform: PS4/Xbox One/PC
Developer: Warhorse Studios
Publisher: Deep Silver
The upcoming premium DLC A Woman’s Lot for the medieval action-RPG Kingdom Come Deliverance will allow players this time to take on the role of Theresa, who not only gains her own story that takes place before the attack, but gains access to weapons and even her own part of the map. Theresa‘s story although continues throughout the ambush of Skalitz, her priority in the aftermath is to take care of the wounded that have managed to flee from the event.
You will gain a new dog companion named Tinker. The dog has its own set of abilities which you can level up, including “sense of smell” this will help in sniffing out the enemies that cross your path. But don’t expect the dog to stay loyal if he isn’t treated well, the ability “obedience” will determine if your sidekick will continue to follow you. Theresa has her own ways to deal with the attackers that still appear around the outskirts of town, using stealth to sneak up behind them, killing them off and of course taking their loot. This isn’t the only way to tackle foes, as you can even send in your dog to attack them.
Kingdom Come: Deliverance A Woman’s Lot DLC releases on May 28th for PS4, Xbox One and PC. The Kingdom Come Deliverance Royal Edition which includes all downloadable content including A Woman’s Lot also releases May 28th.
5. Atelier Lulua: The Scion of Arland
Release Date: May 21st (US)/May 24th (EU)
Publisher: KOEI Tecmo
Set several year’s after Aterlier Meruru: The Apprentice of Arland, this title follows a heart-warming journey of a young Elemerulia Fryxel, an upbeat girl who studies the art of alchemy in order to follow the footsteps of her mother. Filling her shoes won’t be easy as she is the famous Rorona Fryxell who has already made a name for herself. Those who have followed the Arland series will run into old characters and rediscover the land of Arland which now looks different after some time has passed.
The game features new synthesis options, battle and exploration systems. Following the Arland style of gameplay mixed in with some elements from the Mysterious series. The battle system concentrates on turn-based actions where a party of five members comprised of two attackers and two support roles will fight against enemies. Those who are deemed attackers have a range of unique abilities, for example Eva can use a range shift skill which will extend her area of attack for a few turns. There is also a new interrupt ability for alchemists through a pre-equipped item which is consumed upon use.
Atelier Lulua: The Scion of Arland releases on Playstation 4 and Nintendo Switch on May 21st in the US and May 24th in Europe.
4. Lapis x Labyrinth
Release Date: May 28th (NA)/May 31st (EU)
Developer: Nippon Ichi Software
Publisher: NIS America
Players will join a quest for treasure-hunting for high-octane, where both danger and great rewards await. This unique dungeon crawler JRPG will combine 4 of your characters in a “Dango” tower, stacked to face enemies, allowing you to swap between your character classes unique abilities. Choose from 8 character classes and form your party. There are over 4,000 unique combinations to customise your team with, creative stacking mechanics can lead to synchronised attacks.
With risk comes great rewards, as you go deeper and deeper into each level, the rewards become greater. The goal is to defeat the foes that await you, destroying the crystals in order to receive your treasure. But, if you stay too long more enemies will ensue, spawning merciless invincible monsters so timing is key. Choose from 8 different character classes that all have their part to play including Hunter, Necromancer, Shielder, Maid (because I guess someone has to clean up the mess), Gunner, Witch, Destroyer and Bishop.
Lapis x Labyrinth releases on PS4 and Nintendo Switch on May 28th in North America and May 31st for Europe.
3. Vambrace: Cold Soul
Release Date: May 28th
Developer: Devespresso Games
Originally set to release last month, Devespresso Games pushed back the release date for the month of May.
Vambrace: Cold Soul is a narrative driven rogue-like title that pits players against brutal challenges matched with deep strategy. Players take on the role of Evelia Lyric, the only human able to enter frost covered Icenaire, the cursed city. Now inhabited by it’s former residents that have been raised from the dead, these Wraiths plague the city. It is down to you to bring hope to this darkened land, as you bear the enchanted vambrace. Plan your missions underground and then head to the surface with your team to combat strange encounters.
Journeying into an epic fantasy adventure, this title spans over 7 chapters, captured in a beautiful hand-drawn artstyle. You can choose to take part in sub-quests to unlock character skins. Battle through perils with your party in turn-based combat, choosing from 5 different races which include humans, elves, foxier, dwarves or drow, and 10 different classes. Items can be crafted as well as armor, use materials gathered from your side-scrolling adventure. It’s down to your decisions, that will make or break your party’s survival.
Vambrace: Cold Soul will now release on PC on May 28th.
2. For the King
Release Date: May 7th/May 9th/May 10th (Xbox One)
Platform: PS4/Switch/Xbox One
Developer: IronOak Games
Publisher: Curve Digital
Set in a world where the King is dead, killed by an unknown assailant in the once peaceful kingdom of Fahrul. Now the kingdom lays in chaos, the queen has been left to turn to the citizens of the Fahrul for help. This is where you and your band of adventurers must come to the rescue. Choose to battle it out together or split up your party to cover more ground. It will be up to your strategy as well as luck to see the return of peace to the kingdom.
For the King is a dungeon crawler that brings JRPG combat, strategy and rogue-like features. Use a mix of procedural maps, quests and events as you brave the elements as well as evil creatures. The gameplay focuses on turn-based combat with a unique slot system for attacks and unique abilities. Choose when to set up camp for the night, whether its a safe spot or to endure the wickedness that comes out at night.
For the King releases on Playstation 4 on May 7th, Nintendo Switch on May 9th and Xbox One on May 10th.
1. Elder Scrolls Online: Elsweyr

Platform: PS4/Xbox One (June 4th)
Developer: Zenimax Online Studios

Taking the top spot this month is none other than Elder Scrolls Online as they are releasing their expansion which shakes things up a little with the return of dragons to Tamriel. Not only does the expansion bring a new area to explore, a host of characters old and new, challenging 12-player trial, new world quests featuring Dragon Attacks as well as a brand new class, the Necromancer.
Necromancer harnesses the power of bringing the dead back to do your bidding, the use of Gravelord Skills will imbue the dead with Frost, Fire or Lightning, raise hordes of the undead to attack your enemies. Bone Tyrant Skills will bend and break the dead to your will, creating a impenetrable wall and increase your own survivability. Living Death Skills draws powers of life and death, helps to restore your allies and resurrect your fallen comrades to bring them back to the battle.
This latest chapter introduces dragons back into Tamriel, awoken by Abnur Tharn‘s doing as well as queen Euraxia. The dragon Kaalgrontiid will bring a new threat to the home of the Khajiit. Discover the ancestral birthplace of the Khajiit, their ways, their culture and their history. Help them defend their land against the merciless attack of the dragon.
