In a recent interview with The Guardian, Tom Howard the studio Director of Bethesda Games Studios shares his opinion about remastering The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind.
Todd Howard Has No Intention in Remastering Morrowind
Bethesda Games Studios has been well known for such titles as Fallout 1 & 3 as well as action-RPG The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind. Although they had remastered The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim not long ago, Howard expresses his view on a remastered version of Morrowind:
For Skyrim Remastered, we had done some work on it but it was already pretty visually close. But for something like Morrowind, my personal preference is not to remaster it.
But his view on backwards compatibility is quite different from that of remasters:
I’m happy that you can play Morrowind now on an Xbox One, as it’s backwards compatible. I’m really happy that Microsoft, Sony, Nintendo and others are making it easier for people to play [older games] as they were played at the time. I actually prefer that over remasters…I’d rather you play Morrowind the way it was … I think the age is part of its identity.
While companies such as Microsoft have recently been expanding their backwards compatibility when it comes to their titles, by letting their consumers use previous game discs on their current console as well through the Microsoft store, this is not the only way to access original games. Streaming technology is fast becoming another option, Howard also had an opinion on this topic:
I think streaming technology is definitely coming, and it’s gonna make people’s access to games infinitely easier. You’ve seen it happen to music and movies and I think it’s a great thing.
