Fans of the Soulslike Genre definitely have a lot to choose from this 2022. Of course, we have the ever-popular Elden Ring released last February. Over the horizon, we also have games such as Dolmen and Achilles: Legends Untold with more unique settings. However, fans of gothic horror will definitely find solace in Thymesia, which was just announced to release on August 9, 2022.

Thymesia’s developers also announced that there is currently a limited demo available for the game. Players can try out the title between May 2 to May 9, 2022.

What is Thymesia?

Thymesia is an action-RPG Souls-like game that is heavily inspired by Bloodborne. The game is being developed by OverBorder Studio and is being published by Team17 (who also published the RTS survival game Age of Darkness). It is much quicker than things like Dark Souls, and a tad more cinematic. The game has quite a few artistic kill moves and flashy abilities which make things interesting to look at.

We at Fextralife were lucky enough to get early access to the beta late last year. You can check out our impressions in more detail Thymesia – A Bloodborne-Like Action RPG Coming Next Year (2022).

For everyone else though, here’s a bit of an introduction. Players take up the mantle of plague doctor Corvus. The unnamed land that Thymesia takes place in once thrived with the usage of alchemy to prevent disease. However, it was discovered that the use of such sciences had catastrophic consequences. Instead of preventing the plague, alchemy was responsible for it. People turned into monsters and rampaged throughout the kingdom, creating anarchy and destruction all throughout.

It is only Corvus who holds the key to undoing all of the problems. However, he conveniently has lost his memory and must find a way to unlock the hidden recesses of his mind.

Plague, Inc.

As an experienced Plague Doctor, Corvus is able to effectively wield pestilence as a weapon. He is not a hardened warrior though, and far from it. Corvus must make use of many light attacks, dodges, deflects, parries, and the more unique raven feathers.

Corvus can zip around the battlefield, doing attacks and parries, which are standard for the Souls-like genre. Feathers are similar to Bloodborne’s Quicksilver Bullets, which are primarily used to interrupt or stun enemies. He also has access to a Raven Form which will enable the use of heavier attacks.

Plague Damage is also one special thing about this game. Plague Energy is essentially your mana or main resource in the game, which you can leech off from enemies. This energy allows Corvus to unleash some more devastating attacks and combos.

And devastating they are! As previously mentioned, Thymesia has some excellently impactful finishing move animations. You can definitely feel the weight of each special kill, making one smile with glee.

Plague Weapons are also customizable upgrades. Corvus can make use of magical spears, arrows, and more to further make his playstyle your own.

I Got Better!

Thymesia’s visuals and audio are also equally haunting. OverBorder Studio’s game takes place in a lonely world that is highly reminiscent of the streets of Yharnam, albeit more infested with bubonic pustules. However, that is where the similarities end in terms of looks.

The team at OverBorder also makes their title stand out with the ominous green glows that are often attributed to plague and disease. Everything from Corvus’ glowing green eyes in his raven form to the ominous hue of his Scythe Plague Weapon just radiates style and substance.

Enemies are also quite varied. You have your standard crazed, fever-stricken villagers and armored knights. But you also have some more twisted abominations, fully taken over by the plague. Horrific beasts also stalk the kingdom’s many alleyways and streets, their grotesque, disease-ridden flesh just waiting to be sliced by Corvus’ many blades.

Fullmetal Alchemy

Thymesia releases on August 9, 2022. OverBorder is releasing the game on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S. It is interesting to note that this is one of the first few games that will not have a release on the previous console generation. Thymesia is definitely a good try for fans who are itching for more Souls-like games and have had their fill of Elden Ring by now. It is a decent action RPG that fans of the genre should keep on their radar.
