This Week in RPGs – September 3rd, 2023
While not the plethora of news we got with Gamescom last week, still is filled with news. This week Starfield prepared its lift-off with early access, Soulframe got some extensive gameplay footage, New World expansion was announced, a further look at Banishers Ghosts of New Eden and more. Don’t go anywhere as we’ll catch you up with the latest RPG news.
Path of Exile 2
- Grinding Gear Games have just recently showcased the new Druid class in all their elemental and shapeshifting fury. They also released some developer sit-down footage in which they talk about the combo potential that the Warriors and Huntresses will have access to.
- The Philosophy in Path of Exile 2 is that players are rewarded for working towards their damage. It isn’t as straightforward as the first game, as combining your various skills and effects will be crucial to efficiency.
- Druids in Path of Exile 2 are your typical hybrid class that can shapeshift and use elemental magic to devastate their foes. The Druid is a mix of Strength and Intelligence, which is evident in their animal and human forms, respectively.
- In caster form, players have access to four main abilities Lightning Storm, Summon Wolf, Tornado, and Volcano. Path of Exile 2 wants Druid players to maximize the time in a shapeshifted form, so the caster abilities are usually either buffs or area skills that tend to last for a long period of time.
- New as well in Path of Exile 2 is the Warrior class, which looks to be heavy on strength like the previous game’s Marauder. Warriors are big on mobility, as even basic attacks have some sort of movement tied to them. One of their specific effects is called Armor Break and can open up the class for some powerful combos.
- Warriors can also use an ability called Infernal Cry, which is essentially a taunt that also has the caster deal extra damage as fire. Enemies that die while taunted explode into a firey mess.
- Path of Exile 2 is still a long way to go, as even the closed beta period is slated for a June 2024 window.

Soulframe
- Tennocon 2023 happened over last weekend, and along with it was a closer look at the MMORPG Soulframe. The Warframe developer Digital Extremes showed off 30 minutes of gameplay for the upcoming fantasy multiplayer.
- Based on last year’s reveal, what we know is that Soulframe takes its roots in correcting the past mistakes humanity has made toward the natural world. And one of the few ways to do this is by taking the aid of several ancestors.
- In contrast to the highly mobile Warframe, Soulframe takes a much slower and precision-based approach. Taking on the role of an Envoy, a once Ode soldier whose memory has been lost. In order to discover who you are, you explore the open-world Midrath Island where you discover spirits wandering around and go up against the minions of Ode. You can form Pacts with the souls of these ancestors, allowing you to change your skills accordingly.
- While the MMORPG is open world, this changes up once you enter a dungeon. These are procedurally generated. Combat follows Souls game inspiration, with more calculated combat with dodging, and parrying. There’s also spell casting, as well as stealth and environmental interactions.
- The game is set to be free to play. No release window has been announced as of yet.

Grim Dawn Fangs of Asterkarn
- The ARPG Grim Dawn got a surprise announcement in the form of an entirely new expansion, 4 years after the last one. The Fangs of Asterkarn will bring players to the frigid mountains, towering forests as well some dark and dingy caves.
- In the new expansion, players will be attempting to resolve conflicts and push back corruption. All isn’t as it seems, as the local population called the Kurn have a dark past that may be more trouble than it’s worth.
- Clearly, the highlight of Fangs of Asterkarn is the introduction of the game’s 10th Mastery (or class), the Berserker. These unwavering warriors are some of the most staunch citizens of the punishing Asterkarn region.
- Being molded by the elements has given them the ability to enchant their weapons with the cold. Further moving into their berserker roots, the Mastery is also proficient in dual-wielding in combat. And we can only assume yelling while doing so like a true warrior.
- Crate Entertainment has confirmed that the player level cap will not increase in the Fangs of Asterkarn expansion. Player power will be increased via the new items and there are a host of them coming to the game.
- Potions can also be customized in the expansion, allowing players to turn the basic health and mana potions into flasks that provide buffs and a plethora of other useful effects.
- Expect new game modes including the “Ascendant Game Mode” which powers up the campaign mode even further, making all enemies (including bosses) much more challenging. There will also be two new Rogue-Like dungeons being added into the mix, for good measure. The expansion is expected to drop sometime in 2024.

Starfield
- It’s finally here! Bethesda’s latest game, a foray into space exploration. Even before the early access launch this week, Starfield managed to beat Baldur’s Gate 3 in terms of top sellers on Steam. Despite BG3’s amazing success, which has brought the CRPG genre to the forefront of players’ attention, Bethesda’s new IP in the last couple of decades.
- Only time will tell if Starfield can sustain the interest of its players even after it goes live for everyone on September 6. The 1,000-planet claim made by Todd Howard has definitely piqued our interest but it has also made us question how deep exploration is for each and every one of them.
- But your character doesn’t simply explore the universe and the different planets it features, you also become invested in the transcendental experience of what the game has to offer. Companions are also a key focus in Starfield which provide some company when venturing across the galaxy.
- The game has already received stellar scores in reviews including our own which you can check out on our channel after watching this video.
- If you’re planning on checking out Starfield don’t forget to watch our Beginner Guide and our recommendations for Skills in our latest guides. Starfield will be launching on September 6th for those who have purchased the standard edition or planning to play on Xbox Game Pass. But it’s already out for those who have picked up a premium edition.
