This Week in RPGs – October 29th, 2023
This week in RPG news Lords of the Fallen gains 1 million units sold in just 10 days of launch, Last Epoch gets a release date for 1.0, Starfield gains the most new subscriptions for Xbox Game Pass, Achilles: Legends Untold gets dev-narrated new video and we’ll go over more in this week’s video.
Lords of the Fallen
- Lords of the Fallen reached a new milestone by gaining 1 million units sold in just 10 days of its launch.
- The dark fantasy souls-like has capped off its launch with a hefty number of sales. The Action-RPG arrived on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series this month.
- In case you missed it, the reboot of the original with the same name starts one thousand years after the first game. This means you donโt have to have played the first game, as this is a very different setting. The visceral combat pits players against horrific beasts, towering foes and has a unique setting of two realms.
- The game also received some updates this week improving enemy density and just how far they can run after you with the โleashingโ system. This will put a further limit on enemies hunting down players from their spawn point. Other updates include how Vestiges appear in New Game Plus. As you up the level of NG+1 more Vestiges will disappear with NG+3 having all but the main hub and Adyrโs Shrine vestige doing a disappearing act.
- Crossplay was announced to be now running on for both consoles and PC players.

Last Epoch
- Eleventh Hour Games have announced this week that their time-traveling ARPG is releasing its 1.0 version on February 21, 2024. Game director Judd Cobler took to the official forums (and Steam news updates) to share their proud announcement. While it was previously reported that Eleventh Hour Games was still optimistic for a 2023 release, this seems to no longer be feasible.
- One major concern that the team cited was that their original plan, which was December 2023, had become quite crowded, though most major games will have been made available by then.
- A roadmap was unveiled which outlined major additions set for January until February of next year.
- On the table is the long-awaited โItem factionโ system that should help characters be flexible to participate in a โsolo-self-foundโ mode but still have access to trading.
- Previews of the Warlock and Falconer Mastery Classes are arriving on January 25th and February 8th, respectively.
- Beyond this their version of seasons called “Cyclesโ will add โsubstantial new content every few monthsโ.

Starfield
- Starfield has been a whirlwind of new milestones with the most recent being 11 million players and now gaining the most new game pass subscribers for a launch.
- The news broke with Microsoftโs financial conference call for investors and analysts for the first quarter of the fiscal year of 2024. CEO Satya Nadella and CFO Amy Hood shared the performance for Xbox.
- Also during the call, Nadella spoke about the acquisition being finalised for Activision Blizzard King and is โdelightedโ about โbringing great games to playersโ. The acquisition brings along with it a โ13 billion-dollar-plusโ set of franchises including Diablo, Warcraft, Elder Scrolls, Halo, Candy Crush and Gears of War.
- This isn’t the only news for Xbox this week as there was a Partner Preview showcasing indie and third-party titles.

Xbox Partner Preview
- Moving on to the Xbox Partner Showcase, it was 30 minutes of announcements and updates on games.
- Among them were some RPGs such as the wacky return of the Yakuza turn-based game which now drops the Yakuza from the title, Like a Dragon: Wealth Infinite. It has a new trailer previewing some of the absurd battles players will get to dive into and mini-games, there are lots and lots of mini-games.
- Ichiban gets to design, build, and manage his own island paradise called Happy Resort: Don Doko.
- Players will need to engage in various activities to make their island flourish, such as catching butterflies and fish, building roads and furniture, and interacting with the islandsโ various citizens. You may even need to whip out your trusty bat to keep troublemakers in check.
- An indie RPG to look out for is Dungeons of Hinterberg which looks rather unique with its hand-drawn style to it. The new trailer takes a look at the main character Luisa. It showcases meeting new people as well as growing relationships as you progress through the game.
- So it’s not all about killing monsters but also leveling up friendships also unlocks new perks such as removing goo stains from loot, very useful.
- If slaying monsters, exploring the Alps, meeting the locals or solving enigmas takes your fancy, Dungeons of Hinterberg could be your next memorable indie game to play.
- Other trailers included Alan Wake 2, RoboCop: Rogue City, horror game Still Wakes the Deep, Ark: Survival Ascended, Manor Lords, Spirit of the North 2, The Finals, and Ikaro: Will Not Die.

Achilles: Legends Untold
- Dark Point Games has released some new footage of their upcoming Action-RPG Achilles: Legends Untold. The video is narrated by the developer taking a look at what lies in Greece for the brutal Battle of Troy retelling.
- The game is a mix of challenging souls combat with an ARPG edge. In isometric view, players will be faced with soldiers, mythical monsters and even the undead that are roaming the city.
- Much like souls games of yore, the world has linear pathways. To make things a bit more convenient there are fast travel points so you can revisit areas youโve already claimed. But in true bonfire fashion, interacting with Shrines will respawn enemies.
- Furthermore, players arenโt just aided with weapons such as spears. They also gain more magical abilities such as using a shield to hit enemies from afar.
- Achilles: Legends Untold has been early access but will be getting its full launch on November 2nd. Heading to PS5, Xbox Series and PC via Steam and Epic. The game has gone through numerous improvements for combat, with enemies gaining a number of iterations to perfect their unique moves. Along with the launch comes update 1.0 which has been outlined to have some changes and of course the full story. Expect further foes and further side-questing with the full release.

Pathfinder WOTR The Lord of Nothing
- Toward the end of last month, Owlcat Games revealed the sixth DLC coming to Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous called The Lord of Nothing.
- This new expansion will add 15 new archetypes adding further build customisations to the game. The developer has now revealed eight of the upcoming archetypes in a recent post, unravelling more of whatโs to come in the next CRPGโs DLC.
- Players should note that the localisation of the archetypesโ names and abilities is not yet finalised, meaning these could very well change. However, the new info gives great insight into the upcoming new archetypes that are โchangedโ slightly when compared to the original tabletop version of the game.
- New archetypes introduced are for classes Shaman, Paladin, Cleric, Druid, Cavalier, Shifter, Wizard and Witch.
- The Witch gets Hag of Gyronna, a summonable night hag that grants wicked powers. This one has gone through a considerable redesign, instead of gaining high-level powers, but is able to use spells as many times as they like.
- Another unique archetype is the Shifter – Weretouched, that can transform into three different animal forms. This means a variety of play styles and unique abilities.
- These aren’t all the archetypes coming in the The Lord of Nothing DLC but more will be revealed soon.

Remnant 2
- A new update is heading to Remnant 2 which will be adding a Loadout Update and a special Halloween themed event called ‘Aberration Domination’. The third-person shooter will be gaining this update on all platforms PC, Xbox Series X|S and PS5.
- Giving the co-op shooter some more flexibility build-wise players will be welcoming a Loadout Update. This much-requested feature will allow Remnant 2 players to create and customise different character builds. This will make switching builds a piece of cake as you can optimise different loadouts with weapons, armor and rings. This could also mean switching Archetype hybrids as well.
- It’s time to get into the Halloween spirit as the event ‘Aberation Domination’ heads to the game from October 27th to October 31st. Things are about to get even creepier in Nightmare difficulty. The world will be infiltrated by aberrations for a frightful good time. No doubt it will provide more challenges and more ghoulish activities to part take in as well as new corrupted weapons.
- Gunfire Games also teases more updates coming to the game in future including crossplay support. Previously discussed in a Reddit AMA the developer talked about a DLC launching within one year of launch as well as new Archetypes being a possibility.
