The Witcher fans have more to look forward to as CD Projekt Red confirmed that a new game in the beloved RPG series is getting a new entry.

The Witcher Series Will Live on As CD Projekt Red Confirms New Game in Development Using Unreal Engine 5

CD Projekt Red Confirmed that the highly beloved Witcher game series will be getting a new entry. The game is confirmed to be a totally new saga for the franchise, which makes us only assume that Geralt will no longer be the main protagonist in the game. Our minds can go wild with speculation as to who our main hero or heroine will be this time around.

As of writing, no specific details have been shared. There is no release date planned, and the team did not show off a cinematic trailer to make this announcement as they did for Cyberpunk 2077 many years back. Instead, a simple blog post on their main side made the announcement.

This fourth mainline The Witcher game was actually confirmed back in March of 2020. It was hinted at even further back in 2018, but not given a highlight since Cyberpunk 2077 was in development.

Making Use of the Unreal Engine

CD Projekt Red has confirmed that they will be moving away from their in-house REDengine. Instead, they have partnered up with Epic Games. The entire technical development that will go into this unannounced Witcher game will be on Unreal Engine 5. They will be working closely with Epic to be able to ensure that their licensed engine will be capable of being able to achieve all of their goals for an open-world game.

Previously, CD Projekt Red has made use of the REDengine for all their games since The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings, The Witcher III up until the upcoming expansion for Cyberpunk 2077. Even further back, they made use of a modified Aurora Engine which they leased from Bioware.

It was also confirmed in a Tweet from the official The Witcher Twitter account that the game will not be an Epic Exclusive. “We are not planning on making the game exclusive to one storefront” a Tweet said. This makes perfect sense as CD Projekt Red has its own storefront, Good Old Games (GoG). It would be odd for their game to not appear on their own digital store.

Who’s the Main Protagonist for the Next Witcher Game?

We currently do not know who will be the star of the show this time around. We have been able to have a lot of time with Geralt and his buddies at the School of the Wolf. This specific group has been the highlight for all three mainline games, the Netflix Series starring Henry Cavil as well as the anime “Nightmare of the Wolf”.

So who does this leave us with? Canonically, there are seven schools that train any budding witchers. Each of these groups has different methodologies as well as practices, but they all produce extremely skilled monster slayers.

We have the School of the Wolf, the Griffin, the Bear, the Viper, the Manticore, the Crane and the Cat. The teaser image on The Witcher website showed off an abandoned medallion that’s encased in some snow. The medallion, which Witchers use to sense magic, looks quite feline. This can lead to some speculation that the newest Witcher game would follow someone from the School of the Cat.

Who do we know is part of the School of the Cat? The Witcher III had a few segments that you could play as Ciri whilst Geralt tracks her down. In those memories, we can see briefly that instead of a Wolf Medallion on the upper left like when we use Geralt, Ciri instead has a Cat Medallion. Does this mean we can potentially play as Ciri in the newest Witcher game? Probably not. But it’s fun to speculate.

If one looks even closer, however, you can see that the medallion looks a bit more like a lynx. These felines are even bigger than cats, have tipped ears and tufts of hair on their chins. This looks quite similar to the pointed ears of the medallion and the sharp protruding segments on the bottom part. Could this be a new The Witcher school entirely, or a “rebranding” of the existing School of the Cat? Could we even create a custom character instead of a pre-made one, just like in other open-world titles such as Elden Ring?

The Witcher and Where It’s At

The Witcher 3 is still a very popular game. So popular, in fact, that CD Projekt Red has committed to releasing a next-gen version of the game. This version will feature ray-tracing, enhanced texture resolution (care of some well-known Witcher modders) as well as other enhancements. Last we heard, the update was planned for a Q2 2022 release window so probably between April and June.
