The Witcher: Monster Slayer AR Mobile Game Announced

Much like the mobile titles Pokemon Go and Harry Potter: Wizards Unite, CD Projekt Red have announced their own augmented reality mobile game called The Witcher: Monster Slayer. The title gets a short trailer showing a hunter on their own in the woods, coming across an enemy in which he must fight using his phone.

The game was created under CD Projekt’s studio Spokko, which adds monster hunting with AR, and is set before the events of the The Witcher games. So a prequel Witcher game on mobile.

There are also some screenshots that have been released which show a sort of bestiary, the same monster that was shown in the trailer, the world when walking and what could be a traveling merchant.

According to the official description the Monster Slayer will allow players to explore the world around them, letting them track and study monsters. There will be some familiar ones from the Witcher series and some new ones to fight. You can also brew potions, craft bombs and even make monster bait.

Featuring console-grade visuals, Monster Slayer lets players explore the world around them while tracking, studying, and fighting monsters both new and familiar, using time of day and real-life weather conditions to gain the upper hand. Preparation is key in order to defeat tougher enemies, as players will need to brew powerful potions and oils, craft bombs and monster bait, and upgrade their character before putting these beasts to the sword and signs in first-person AR combat. In addition to battling monsters lurking close-by, the game also contains rich, story-driven quests inspired by other games from the series, taking players on full-fledged adventures that thrust them into the heart of what it means to be a professional monster slayer.

The Witcher got it’s own Netflix series earlier this year, featuring Henry Cavill as Geralt of Rivia. This sparked a resurgence in players for The Witcher 3, gaining the most concurrent players the game had ever seen, even when it launched. The mobile game just adds to the host of ways players can dive into the The Witcher universe, whether it be by books, game, TV series, or even now mobile.

The Witcher: Monster Slayer will be coming to iOS and Android, with a launch date to be announced later this year.
