The Waylanders Releases On Steam Early Access on June 16th

During the IGN Summer of Gaming showcase, Gato Salvaje Studio announced the upcoming RPG The Waylanders will be releasing on Steam Early Access on June 16th.

The upcoming Celtic and medieval inspired RPG The Waylanders will be coming to Steam Early Access on June 16th available for $34.99 with a limited-time launch discount of 10%. The party-based game features real-time combat, with tactical pause option for players to have control over offensive Formations. This allows for a deeper combat experience, as Formations allows for players to round up other party members to perform specific class-based moves against enemies.

Keeping that classic CRPG feel, the game has an option for top-down perspective but also offers third-person follow-cam. This choice was to give players options of how they experience the game, but Gato also want to stay true to their influences according to an interview with IGN:

The dual viewpoints made us design a game flow that works with both game styles and made balancing combat a bit more complex, but we are happy with the result. … It was a lot of work, but that Dragon Age or Neverwinter feeling is important for us.

The title has six basic classes, a choice of 30 advanced classes and 9 companion characters to choose from, with the option for romance. This gives plenty of flexibility in terms of RPG playstyles and character creation.

The developer also shares that the title isn’t just about legends but dives into a narrative about “culture and our roots”. It also focuses on consequences based on the player’s decisions, with a story that spans over a time frame of a thousand years. Jumping forward in time to the middle ages, showing the outcome of your actions, but also time travels back.

The creative director of Gato Slavaje Studio Sergio Prieto, explained that they value feedback from players, and ready to move into early access:

All the team was deeply involved in the development, and I’m very proud of the work we’ve done so far. As we head into Steam Early Access, we want the game to grow with player’s feedback so it becomes not only a fantastic RPG, but also the best Celtic game possible.

The studio started it’s Kickstarter project in 2018 where it surpassed it’s goal with over 3,300 backers. The title is inspired by classic RPGs such as Dragon Age: Origins, Neverwinter Nights 2 and Baldur’s Gate.

The Early Access portion of the game according to an interview with IGN, will cover the first act of the story, but will not get into the “time jump” aspect of the game. You can also expect between 10 to 12 hours of content, with a total of 40 hours when it officially launches. The games covers 8 locations with over 40 maps.

Gato also previously revealed that certain classes will have the option of animal companions, these include a number of furry friends, all having different advantages from distraction to speed. There are also Invocations for magic classes, that can be summoned for short periods of time.

  1. This looks interesting for sure, but I am disappointed it is not turn-based or has a turn-based option. Of course, that’s probably demanding too much from a small dev team, but the precedent was established already (POE, Pathfinder: Kingmaker…). Anyway, what do you guys think? Will you play it even if it doesn’t have turn-based options?
