The Legend of Zelda: Tears of The Kingdom Release Date Announced for May 2023

After a long wait and plenty of teases, Nintendo finally gave the fans what they wanted, the sequel title name to Breath of the Wild and the actually release date. The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom was announced at the end of the latest Nintendo Direct, giving an explosive end to the showcase. In a brief teaser trailer we also got the release date which will be coming to Nintendo Switch on May 12th 2023.

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom will launch on May 12th 2023

A Long Time Coming

The sequel is some time away though. We have roughly eight months until we actually get to play the game (provided no more delays). But it will be worth the wait, making it about six years after the release of the first title Breath of the Wild. BOTW was a Switch launch title and also came to Wii U. Originally the Zelda entry was supposed to launch solely as a Wii U title, but got delayed a few times before being released for both consoles. It was an instant smash hit, being one of the first games to release on the Switch, letting you easily sink in over 100+ hours exploring and uncovering all of the secrets Hyrule has to offer.

Link will be flying into 2023

Tears of the Kingdom first got confirmation of being in development back at E3 2019, but didn’t have a title at the time. The teaser trailer at E3 2021 also shared it was aiming to be released in 2022, but the new trailer now confirms that’s not the case. The official listing page on the Nintendo website is now live, but no price has been announced or pre-orders. But we can probably expect similar pricing to the first title.

The Kingdom and Beyond

There’s not a whole lot to go on at the moment except for the previous teasers and today’s unveiling. We see the return of Link, but now exploring a kingdom in the skies as well as the open lands of Hyrule.

The first trailer revealed the dark presence of Ganon and the return of Zelda in some form. The trailer showed Link traveling with Zelda on horseback, then something happens to Hyrule Castle in the distance. An unknown magic is perceived to be resurrecting a skeletal figure, with some speculating that this could be the return of Ganon. As well as a teaser with Link holding what appears to be a broken master sword.

Not a whole lot to go on but we did also get some teasers of Link’s new ability to teleport through stone and today flying on the back of a giant winged glider. We’ll have to wait a little longer for more gameplay and details, which should come out closer to launch.
