A newly released gameplay demonstration shows off The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom and Link’s new abilities in the upcoming sequel.
The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Gameplay Demo Reveals Link’s New Abilities
A new gameplay demo is introduced by Eiji Aonuma who goes through some of the new features of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of Kingdom which include Link’s new abilities. The good news is the development for the title has officially been completed, so it looks to be on track for its launch this May.
The demo starts with a look at the world of Hyrule which has gone through some changes. For starters, there are now floating islands or Sky Islands which we have seen in previous videos. Apparently, there are a lot of changes which can’t be covered in just one video, so we get a brief overview of some of them today.
New Link Abilities
Recall
A falling object from the sky kicks off the demo, as Link climbs the mountain to go investigate. Like in the previous title, Link can use different abilities to interact in the world. The Legend of Zelda: Tears of Kingdom brings a new “Recall” ability, which can “Rewind” time, affecting the rock that fell from the sky. Link can hop onto the rock and then ride it back up to where it came from. A sort of elevator to get to and from the Sky Islands. Link can then use his glider to then drift to the island. Aonuma teased this isn’t the only way to reach the islands, so there seem to be more ways to get up.
Ascend
Link will be even able to pass directly through the ceiling of buildings using Ascend. This makes getting around so much fast, as you can port yourself through anything that has a ceiling like a cave. No need to waste time climbing and spending stamina, simply Ascend. This will make getting around so much faster.
Accelerated Dive
If you find yourself being booted off a Sky Island Sparta style, don’t worry as you can easily free-fall back down to the surface. As it’s a long way down you can speed up the process by using “Accelerate” and then “Glide” into a river so you won’t die. This is great if you’ve accidentally gotten yeeted off somewhere at a great height.
New Enemy
We get a peek at a new enemy called Constructs. It looks like a cross between a robot and one of the Ancient Guardians but in mini form. Here Link takes a tree branch to fight it. Once downed we see new materials, the Zonai Charge and Soldier Construct Horn. The previous title lets players purchase ammo, Weapons, and more. Using materials dropped to upgrade or purchase. Maybe we’ll be seeing some Construct weapon types or Armor in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of Kingdom.
New Crafting
Fuse
What the demo does show is that Link can now put together makeshift weapons. Combining a tree branch and rock with the use of Fuse. This seems to be a bit sturdier than the tree branch alone which only takes a few hits to break its durability. The footage shows Link going ham on two Constructs using the makeshift hammer, now with some better damage in tow. But tree branches and rocks are the only items that can be fused. Link can Fuse together two weapons. For example, putting together a stick and pitchfork to make a longer-reaching pitchfork. This also ups its damage and means you can attack from further away in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of Kingdom
Furthermore, Ammo also can be fused with materials that you pick up. Link can be seen combining an arrow with a Korok leaf, and even an Ice Chuchu Jelly. This means you can freeze enemies from afar using a Bow. Mixing an arrow with a Keese Eyeball will make it hone in on far-away targets such as birds overhead. This is great for those who don’t want to spend time getting the perfect shot and wasting precious arrows.
Shields can be Fused with Puff Shrooms which gives a new effect. A mist of cloud to help shroud you from enemies. The possibilities seem endless as this new feature opens up lots of ways to manipulate materials, weapons and more.
Ultrahand
Logs can be put together to make a raft using Ultrahand. Adding a fan will mean the raft can be turned into a sort of powerboat. I can already see that players will try creating some really interesting objects if this isn’t constricted. We already saw previously Link riding a vehicle across the land, and you’d be right in guessing this is craftable. So while we won’t be gaining vehicles from the start of the game, we will be able to put them together themselves and make what we need. This is a great addition as now players can Lego different objects, which will really amp up ways to travel across the map and upwards into the sky.
The Legend is Back
This new footage has me really excited to play the sequel as it adds many more options, opening up gameplay of the original. While I’m probably going end up being kicked off those Sky Islands, the new gliding feature should save me a death or two. Now you can craft crude makeshift weapons while you’re on the go, which means not having to settle for a weak tree branch for battle. We can’t wait to see more of what The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom will bring as it’s looking awesome.
