The League of Legends MMO Receives A Positive Update

The League of Legends universe continues to expand and aims to maintain its upward trajectory by venturing into one of the most popular genres: the MMO. Riot Games is working on a massive multiplayer game set in the world of Runeterra.

We’ve heard about this project before, but not long ago, it was revealed that the League of Legends MMO had faced a setback and had to restart its development. Now, the game is “gaining a lot of momentum,” according to Marc Merrill.

In an interview with Marc “Caedrel” Lamont during the 2024 Worlds finals (via GamesRadar), Merrill was asked for updates on the game. While no new details were announced, he stated that the team has been “working hard on it.”

The Future of League of Legends

Merrill emphasized that this game “is the project I’ve personally spent the most time on. I believe the team now has a solid direction and is gaining strong momentum,” which has helped fans regain some optimism after a couple of years of silence.

Additionally, the Riot Games co-founder highlighted the high “expectations” surrounding a game of this type from fans and noted that the team “aims not to disappoint.” However, it seems we’ll still have to wait to see it in action.

In recent years, the Runeterra universe has expanded with projects like Song of Nunu and Arcane, the popular Netflix series whose eagerly awaited second season is set to premiere soon.

For years, many fans have requested a League of Legends MMO to expand the Runeterra universe, envisioning a game with an identity similar to World of Warcraft or The Elder Scrolls Online.

However, a game of this scale takes time, and the project has faced several challenges. Just over a year ago, it was reported that the executive producer of the League of Legends MMO had left Riot Games.
