The New Controversy at The Game Awards 2024

Baldur’s Gate 3 was crowned Game of the Year (GOTY) in 2023 for players on PC, Steam Deck, PS4, PS5, Xbox, and Switch. Now, with the next The Game Awards on the horizon, rumors and speculation are swirling.

While the nominees for Game of the Year 2024 will be announced on November 18, 2024, around 5:00 PM in Spain, the ultimate question will be answered later.

As we wait for the final verdict, a new controversy stirred up by Geoff Keighley has sparked debate, and it lies within one of the FAQ responses on the event’s official site.

At the bottom of the FAQ page, you’ll find the question: “Are DLC, expansion packs, and remakes/remasters eligible?”—the center of the controversy.

“The Game Awards aims to recognize the best creative and technological work each year, regardless of the format in which the content is released.

Expansion packs, new game seasons, DLC, remakes, and remasters are eligible in all categories if the jury determines […] that they deserve a nomination.”

The response also clarifies: “Factors such as the novelty of the content and its price/value will be considered,” which opens up many possibilities.

A Debate With Familiar Names

One prominent example is Elden Ring. FromSoftware’s game, which launched in 2022 and won GOTY at The Game Awards that year, returned to the spotlight in 2024 with the release of its expansion Shadow of the Erdtree. The Japanese studio, led by Hidetaka Miyazaki, captivated audiences once again with enhanced and expanded content.
