Nexon Korea’s “Project Magnum” finally has a proper title: The First Descendant. The third-person looter shooter was originally announced way back in July of 2021. Back then there were little details aside from the promise of beautiful visuals and strong third-person shooting.

Now, however, we have more info on the title, such as what The First Descendant is about, what they’ll be fighting, and when we can expect the beta test.

All About The First Descendant

The First Descendant is a free-to-play cooperative game, similar to the vein of things like Outriders, Warframe, and The Division. Instead of Space Ninjas, or apocalypse survivors, this game has players play as “Descendants” and make use of fancy futuristic suits and armors.

Descendants are all tasked with one thing, above all: the defense of the Ingris Continent. They are to fight some monstrous, gigantic aliens and machine invaders. These enemies range from simple foot soldiers, swarm-like alien pods, massive armored behemoths, and more. From the old trailers back in September 2021 it looks like we’ll get quite the variety of foes to slay.

At the moment though it isn’t clear how Descendants will get around. There isn’t any mention of a central hub, a customizable ship, or if the game is mission-based or open world.

Armed to the Teeth

The First Descendant won’t have you face off against these cosmic horrors with simple guns and swords. Descendants’ suits are highly mobile, extremely durable, and armed to the teeth.

Players will be able to choose from different characters, each with their own play styles. While Nexon hasn’t announced the specifics just yet, the old trailer has some hints at what may be in store for us.

Promotional footage included a sort of male ranger type with an assault rifle, a female brandishing a shotgun, and an armored heavy complete with a bull-horned helmet, a massive hammer, and a giant cannon.

Customization Nation

To stand out from the likes of The Division, player loadouts will consist of 3 main guns and 4 pieces of backup equipment. Descendants can equip some exotic items such as grenades that create a gravitational field that pulls in enemies. They also have the option to fortify their firsts, increasing their hand-to-hand capabilities. If all else fails, players can even make use of magical abilities such as Frost and Flame.

Movement is also being made more fun, so players will enjoy even basic traversal. One way that Nexon is making The First Descendant exciting is with the addition of a Grappling Hook. Players can use these to chain together attacks and other movement abilities. It may not be like Warframe’s bullet jumps, but this will definitely be interesting.

Of course, it isn’t a looter shooter without impressive loot! Aside from weapons and armor to collect, players can gather a large number of customization options and skins. No two Descendants in Ingris will look alike!

Visually Stunning

The First Descendant is being built on Unreal Engine 5, meaning its visuals will be up to par with a current-gen title. Judging by its initial official trailer, it is making quite good use of the engine and the resources available to it.

Swarm Them!

Combat seems to be frantic and exciting, with dozens of enemies running through the screen at once. Some set pieces in the trailer also look quite impressive with the number of things happening at the same time. One scene even has several Descendants grappling with an enemy as it falls backward, keeping up a relentless assault.

The game also promises to have intense boss fights with huge adversaries. It looks like these boss encounters will have multiple stages to them, and specific parts can be targeted. Perhaps this will be like Monster Hunter or Horizon Forbidden West where you can disable certain attacks by hitting specific parts.

Darkest Descendant

Players can sign up for the beta on its official Steam Page right now. Beta access is planned to run from September 28 to October 4. No specific release date has been given, however. The First Descendant will be free-to-play.
