Square Enix CEO Yosuke Matsuda has weighed in on the recent discussion regarding loot boxes and whether or not they will continue to primarily focus on single-player games.
Loot boxes discussed by Square Enix CEO Yosuke Matsuda
He has now gone on record to assure their fans that single-player titles aren’t under fire, and that they will also tread lightly around the recent controversy on loot boxes. Matsuda says that the problem is caused by the term ‘Games as a service’ which “has a very wide meaning.”
“Recently people have been discussing loot boxes and people not using that [mechanic] properly, I think that’s all linked to this bad perception people have to the words ‘games as a service’, but really, the way we’re looking at it, what it boils down to is… that idea of keeping people engaged with our games and enjoying them for longer periods of time. That’s the way we really look at the problem.” – Yosuke Matsude, Square Enix CEO

More single-player games and more DLC too.

This approach is also followed by Nintendo with their first-party releases. As a fan of Square Enix‘s games, it’s good to be able to look forward to many more singe-player story-driven games from them.
