Souls-inspired RPG Shooter “Immortal: Unchained” Announced!

T oday Toadman Interactive, a Swedish developer, has announced their upcoming game: a Dark Souls-inspired, Sci-Fi Third-Person Shooter/Action-RPG hybrid titled: Immortal: Unchained. You can watch the announcement trailer above.

Dark Souls-inspired Immortal: Unchained bound for a Q2 2018 Release

Immortal: Unchained is set in a “crazy futuristic fantasy world”, that is collapsing amidst a cosmic event. You are a living weapon, and your task is to bring an end to this cataclysm.

You were unwillingly unchained and released by the warden, and told only that your skills are required to save the world. With no memory of who you are or what you do, you must set off and discover what you can from the game world and characters.

Along the way, things will begin to unravel as you meet the characters and progress the story. However, the truth is not always going to be clear, as the characters you will encounter will have their own agendas.

Mobility, attack trajectory, and well-timed doges all play a crucial role in survival as you encounter enemies. It is described as “far from a reflex shooter” and ‘not an easy game.’ When you die, you are restored by the Monolith, who oversees the flow of the Cosmos, and your bounty is left where you were defeated.

Immortal: Unchained’s Cosmos consists of many worlds, some of which you will visit in the game. All worlds are connected via a complex network knows as the Stream, akin to ‘The Nexus‘ within Demon’s Souls. Explore the Stream and its wondrous and deadly worlds on your mission and collect their clues, gear, and rewards to become a weapon strong enough to save the Cosmos.

While you do play as a preset character, you do have some customization options in the form of selecting six different “Disciplines” at the start of the game. Furthermore, you will have over 100 guns and other unique weapons and armor to choose from as you journey across nine different worlds. According to Toadman Interactive, the game’s gameplay is not for the faint-hearted, and will pack a hearty challenge!

The Cosmos is certainly an interesting choice to set the game in considering its sheer scale and possibilities. And as to why and what is out there? Well… players are going to have to find out for themselves and at their own paces. Toadman Interactive states: “The main plot will never be forced upon anyone, at least not in a very large extent. It harder to find out about what has and is happening, and not to be in the way for those that want to get into combat as fast as possible. Once you start digging, there’s going be a lot of untold stories about the world hidden below the surface.”

The story of Immortal: Unchained is written by Toadman Interactive’s narrative team, including Anne Toole (The Witcher) and Adrian Vershinin (Killzone: Shadow Fall, Battlefield: 1).

Immortal: Unchained is currently in development for the PS4, Xbox One, and PC, set to release sometime during Q2 2018 (both digitally and at retail).

  1. I’m at the point where a game saying it’s “based on Souls” elicits more boredom and slight contempt from me than the expected excitement. I just think, “oh great, another one”. I feel as though this souls train (get it) is getting rode a little too hard nowadays. Don’t get me wrong, I see no problem in games being based on, inspired by, or made to be a spiritual successor of Souls games, but it seems to me like devs are more just copying Fromsof’s design (for better or worse) rather than using it as a basis to invent, innovate, and expand on, at least the ones I see. Looking at a few games, I can usually describe it as, Souls but a side-scroller, souls but top down, souls but in spaaaaaace, souls but with mechs, souls but slower.

That, however, does not mean I automatically think a game that simply says to be souls-like is bad, just that they shouldn’t try to be too much like Dark Souls.

As for Immortal: Unchained, from the 0.001 milliseconds worth of actual combat, I could just as easily compare it to Gears of war, Vanquish, or any third person shooter with dodge mechanics. Soooooo, we just have to wait and see how it looks with more than just a crumb sample of gameplay. Also, twin swords on his back…….nice, though I’m getting a bit of a Kratos vibe.

Don’t worry, I already did. It’s safe now.

Trailer looks pretty cool though (despite being maybe five seconds of content), and that circuit board tree design is classy. We robo-vikings now.
