Sony Announces Playstation Classic – A mini PS1

Last updated on October 19th, 2018

Sony announces the release of a mini version of the their original Playstation, the Playstation Classic. This new version is going to be sold just under $100 and will include pre-loaded games much like the NES Classic or SNES Classic.

Sony Announces Playstation Classic – A mini PS1

The Classic sets to include a library of 20 games that includes the original Final Fantasy 7, Jumping Flash, R4: Ridge Racer Type 4, Tekken 3 and Wild Arms. The name does exactly what it says on the tin, include a range of classic titles that are well known. In an announcement on the Playstation Blog, Sony shares that the games “will be playable in their original format,” so if you’re stickler for authenticity you’ll get something quite close to the original PS1. But this time round it will include modern features such as HDMI port and the “open” button changes the virtual disc.

Those who want to get their hands (or hand as it seems due to it’s size) on this miniature version of retro tech, can on December 3rd which marks the 24th anniversary of the Playstation’s release. Sony originally debut the PS1 in Japan on December 3rd, but it didn’t come to the West until September 1995. This small console will be priced at $99.99 for the US/£89.99 UK/€99.99 Europe.

As someone who holds fond memories of tackling Final Fantasy IX on the original PS1 as well as Crash Bandicoot, it will be interesting to see what other titles will be making that 20 bundle list. It’s funny to see the controller is now roughly the same size as the console itself. What do you think of this nostalgic inspired mini-console? Let us know in the comments below.

Pretty sure no one played Final Fantasy XI (eleven) on PS1. Even with the PS2 you had to have a fancy harddrive installed along with an online adapter. Final Fantasy’s first online only game.
