Sony and its PS4 and PS5 consoles are losing another historical figure of the brand, one who was also present during the PS3 era and beyond. Shuhei Yoshida, who has been overseeing indie initiatives for years, is leaving PlayStation.
Shuhei Yoshida to Retire in January
“If youโve been listening to the PlayStation Podcast for the past 14 years or more, then youโre undoubtedly familiar with Shuhei Yoshida,” the company began in its official blog post.
Although this is secondary, Yoshidaโs legacy includes many notable achievements, such as receiving a BAFTA and being instrumental in bringing games like Stellar Blade to PlayStation consoles.
“Perhaps best known for his long tenure as President of PlayStation Studios during the PS3 and PS4 eras,” Yoshidaโs contributions have been vital for indie studios for years.
He currently heads PlayStation’s Indie Initiative, a role that will now pass to someone else. The PlayStation Blog article, released ahead of the brandโs 30th anniversary, highlights many key milestones in his career.
Yoshida was reportedly one of the first guests on the PlayStation Podcast, “maybe 14 years ago. But itโs been a whileโwhat have you been up to?” Sid Shuman asked him.
Yoshida shared that he has been traveling extensively: to Brazil, India, Australia, Sweden, visiting developers, attending gaming events, reviewing new projects, and tweeting.
However, the important moment came with Shuman’s second question, reminding listeners that Yoshida had returned to the podcast to share significant news.
“Yes, I have an announcement to make. Iโll be leaving Sony Interactive Entertainment on January 15, 2025,” Yoshida said candidly.
Shuhei Yoshida to leave SIE after 31 years with the company
“Itโs like announcing the release date of a new gameโsomething I havenโt done in a long time [laughs],” Yoshida remarked regarding his departure.
Yoshida has been with PlayStation from the very beginning, even considering his exit last year. “But, you know, PlayStation is in good hands. I thought, okay, this is my moment,” he explained.
Although Shuhei Yoshida is leaving SIE after 31 years, he recalls joining Ken Kutaragiโs team in February 1993 when the original PlayStation was still in development.
