2024 has been a defining year for Chinese developers, marked by the huge success of Black Myth: Wukong on PS5 and PC, especially in its home country, where it has been a major hit. This success in the “soulslike” genre has inspired other Chinese studios to reach higher and prepare new titles, including their own take on Call of Duty. And they’re not alone.

S-GAME is preparing Phantom Blade Zero, an wuxia action title so spectacular that, even without a release date, it has already inspired ambitious competitors. This includes Redemption of Liuyin, the RPG-action title from Chinese studio KingnaGame, developed for PS5, Xbox Series, and PC, and aiming to outpace Phantom Blade Zero.

Set for a 2025 release, this game is the third installment in the Ryukyu Hidden action series, which is largely unknown in the West but is now leveling up in ambition with this new entry.

Redemption of Liuyin transports players to a devastated world where a spiritual stone has emerged with the power to heal any disease and renew nature, sparking conflict among those who covet it.

The protagonist belongs to an organization seeking to curb the world’s corruption. To accomplish this, he embarks on a quest for a divine artifact hidden within a fortress filled with dangers.

Story Outline

The storyline promises a fresh approach, allowing players to alter the game’s progression based on the order in which they complete battles, leading to multiple endings depending on their actions.

As an action RPG, Redemption of Liuyin emphasizes a combat system that rewards offensive initiative, where even a slight hesitation can lead to certain death.

The parry mechanic will be the player’s best ally in facing numerous enemies and bosses. Hopefully, the studio has given as much attention to precise control as it has to the combat mechanics.

In addition to honing combat skills, players must analyze their abilities’ characteristics and combine them for maximum effect.

To support this, the game features three sets of active and passive systems, allowing players to configure a fighting style tailored to their preferences.

On a technical level, Redemption of Liuyin performs admirably; while it may not visually match Ghost of Tsushima, it shows great promise as a standout action game for 2025.

KingnaGame hopes that Redemption of Liuyin will be their flagship title for success in the West, pushing the technical boundaries compared to previous Ryukyu Hidden installments.

Additionally, it has the advantage of releasing ahead of Phantom Blade Zero, filling the anticipated gap until S-GAME’s title is finally available. It remains to be seen if it can match the ambition of S-GAME’s project.
