Are you ready for Dark Souls: The Card Game? What we know so far.

Steamforged Games found phenomenal success with Dark Souls: The Board Game, which raised over $5 million on Kickstarter. Having also found success with Bloodborne: The Card Game, it was only natural that they’d also want to make From Software‘s other ruthless hit game a card game too. Here’s what we know about it so far.

“Mng. What’s that? Shiny-shiny. Give me that.” – Giant Blacksmith, Dark Souls.

Will the card game make me suffer and do I have to suffer alone?

Dark Souls: The Card Game attempts to mirror the fiendish difficulty of the video game series. Can you survive when the odds are quite literally stacked against you? It is a card game that can be played either by yourself or in cooperation with up to three other players. Each player assumes a class from the start and each class has unique special abilities. You then build your deck with armour, item, and weapon cards

The object of the game is to accumulate as many souls and as much treasure as you can so that you will be powerful enough to slay the final boss. You use the souls and the treasure to purchase cards to make a larger, more powerful deck. You’ll need to be a tactical player. It’s not enough to just get the right cards. You’ll need to know when is best to play them and when to enhance your moves with Stamina cards.

With Dark Souls: The Board Game such a huge hit and Bloodborne: The Card Game also proving popular, a Dark Souls card game was inevitable.

So we’re all friends here then, right? Right, guys?

If played with other players, it’s sure to get competitive fast. A player who was your ally against a monster mere seconds ago may suddenly stab you in the back to claim a valuable move card.  Should you want to reach the final boss in Dark Souls:  The Card Game, you’ll probably need your allies alive to help you at least get close to your ultimate target…but sooner or later, you may be tempted to backstab your temporary ally or leave them to die. This formula worked really well in Bloodborne: The Card Game, so there’s every reason to think it would work here too.

  1. It’s nice to see them moving forward with all this, but at the same time I’m a little apprehensive. The board game was a brilliant idea that I still need to get around to subjecting my friends to, the card game looks a lot better than expected, but this… looks to be a reskin of the other card game? The first two ideas were unique, uniquely brilliant, and well executed. What will the Dark Souls card game have to differentiate it from the Bloodborne card game? Or will it not?

Something to think about, if that’s the future they’re moving towards.

  2. I’ve actually enjoyed the board game, although the manual leaves a LOT to be desired. Will be interesting to see how this works out!
