Deicide is defined as the killing of a God and it’s mention is enough to raise eyebrows in any setting, even in the fantastical worlds of video games. Games like God of War, Shadow of the Colossus and Dark Souls have brought us epic stories of violence, sadness and the consquences and sacrifice needed to bring down beings of immense power when the conceit of humanity has absolved itself of the need for Gods. Normally the realm of big budget AAA titles, indie developer No Matter is challenging the powers that be with the head turning, reveal trailer for their new tale of deicide, Prey for the Gods. Right now the game is announced for release on PC without a concrete date, but the developer has said all platforms will be considered.
Prey for the Gods Background
From their press release on the official site:
Prey for the Gods is a brutal journey set on a desolate frozen island, where your only chance of survival is to destroy the very gods you believe in.
In Prey for the Gods, you play a lone hero sent to the edge of a dying world to discover the mystery behind a never-ending winter. Arriving with only the clothes on your back, you must survive the colossal dangers that you encounter. To restore balance and reclaim the land from the brink, you will be faced with questions that not even a God knows the answer to.
There are no shortages of inspiration in the going-viral trailer, from the monster scaling homage to games like Shadow of the Colossus and Dragon’s Dogma, to the desolate setting and isolation of the lone hero/heroine. However there is a freshness here that proves the genre has been so lightly trodden, especially in comparison to the oft traveled medieval fantasy worlds we can’t seem to get enough of. There is the play of words going on with the game’s title, and the scene of the presumed deity preparing to eat the player hints at prey become predator with implications for some interesting gameplay mechanics. The trailer is more of a teaser but there is enough going on here to recognize this is an ambitious project and one worth keeping an eye on. We’ll have updates for you as we know more!
