Pokemon Scarlet and Violet were announced way back in February during the Nintendo Direct that month. Since then, we’ve been introduced to the various starter Pokemon, and the November 18, 2022 release date.

During this Pokemon Presents Showcase, however, the team at Nintendo and Game Freak gave us a treasure trove of info on the upcoming game.

The Wide Open Paldea Region

The region that this game will take place in finally has a name: Paldea. Trainers will be able to explore this wild and new area, teeming with secrets and things to find. It is also important to note that this will be the first open-world region in a mainline Pokemon game (Arceus doesn’t count, apparently).

Explore Paldea

Explore Paldea

Paldea will have a large variety of landscapes to explore, from forests to plains, to mountains, and everything in between. Pokemon Scarlet and Violet have the perfect answer on how to quickly, and safely, traverse the terrain.

Trainers will join up with Legendary Pokemon that can be mounted. Scarlet players will team up with Koraidon, while Violet shall be paired with Miraidon. Think of these as basically motorcycle Pokemon, with a twist. Koraidon and Miraidon can change forms at the click of a button, adapting to whatever terrain you step on. They can run through fields, soar in the air, swim in the ocean, or even climb up mountains vertically.

Better with Friends

Better with Friends

Even better is the fact that Pokemon Scarlet and Violet will have co-op multiplayer available on launch. Trainers can group up with up to 3 friends and explore and battle through the Paldea region together in perfect harmony.

My Pokemon Academia

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet won’t start out like a traditional Pokemon game wherein they are just a small child in Pallet Town. Instead, Trainers will start out by enrolling in Paldea’s prestigious Academy. There they will be tasked with a Grand Treasure Hunt that will be completed over 3 major story arcs. Trainers will already be familiar with the first story beat: they will need to travel to, and overcome the challenges of the 8 Gym Battles throughout Paldea. However, this time they can tackle any gym in any order. There will no longer be a linear path to follow.

School's In!

At the moment, the other two stories are highly regarded secrets. Just like the gyms, Trainers can choose which story to engage in first. Freedom seems to be a large portion of Pokemon Scarlet and Violet.

The Academy is not a mere drop-off point for tasks and whatnot. It will be populated by interesting characters that will help guide and mold your journey. Professors Sada and Turo will be your main teachers, as they are legends in their own rights. We will also meet Mr. Clavell, the Academy Director, and Mr. Jacq, our homeroom and biology professor.

Of course, it isn’t all learning, as we will still have friends. These include Nemona, Arven, and Penny.

The Pokemon of Pokemon Scarlet and Violet

Of course, the most interesting thing about Pokemon Scarlet and Violet is the new Pokemon! The Paldean Region is home to many different forms of existing Pokemon. A prime example is Wooper, who is traditionally blue. This Pokemon has turned brown to adapt to this new region.

New Legendary Pokemon

We will also encounter Fidough, a squishy Pokemon that looks more like a lump of bread than a fierce combatant. Cetitan is also a large Pokemon that looks like a mix between a whale and a rhino.

Of course, we were already introduced to the three starter Pokemon: Sprigatito, Fuecoco, and Quaxly.

The Terastral Phenomenom

Paldea has something odd going on in its lands called the Terastral Phenomenom. This happening causes Pokemon to shine bright like a diamond, their bodies taking on jeweled and magical forms. All Pokemon in Paldea can Terastallize and take on this shiny form.

Making a Pokemon Terastallize boosts their capabilities tenfold. Some Pokemon can even change their type whenever they Terastallize, such as making Pikachu a flying type. The form that they transform into depends entirely on their Terra Type.

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet: Terra Raid Battles

The last and arguably one of the most exciting new features of Pokemon Scarlet and Violet is the introduction of Terra Raid Battles. Pokemon with rare Terra types exist in the wilds and are quite capable of holding their own against single trainers. To take down and capture these powerful monsters, players will need to join up and create raid groups.

Raid with Friends!

Terra Raid Battles will play out like traditional Pokemon fights. However, trainers do not need to wait for their allies to take their turns. They can perform their actions independently.

If the group is successful, they will all have the opportunity to catch these rare Terra Type Pokemon and befriend them.

Gotta Catch ‘em All!

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet release exclusively on the Nintendo Switch on November 18, 2022. The game will have two versions, much like any other mainline Pokemon game.
