Playstation CEO Confirms Increase in PS5 Exclusives and Staggering PC Ports

Sony Playstation CEO Jim Ryan talked about the publisher’s current strategy for game releases when it comes to platform exclusives in a recent interview with Famitsu. He shared in the Japanese publication that the plan for PS5 games is to increase the number of releases. However, don’t expect day-one releases for PC. The PC ports are expected to be staggered:

We also fully understand the importance of PS5 exclusive titles. As I mentioned earlier, PlayStation Studios’ main responsibility is to make games for the latest PlayStation hardware that players will enjoy. We are increasing the number of PS5 exclusive games, and staggering the release of the PC versions.

This may not come as a total surprise as it makes sense for the publisher to be supporting its own platform and exclusive releases. According to Ryan, he has gotten feedback from “game fans” which has supported this outlook for game releases. Saying that “a PC version two or three years” is deemed as “acceptable”.

Ryan remains resilient despite the hurdles that the company has faced during covid. He is also optimistic in PS5 remaining as an attractive platform to gamers due to its “excellent titles”, not only in Japan but in all regions.

Day One PC Ports Not Happening

Releasing a title only for one platform means they can concentrate on providing the best performance for their console. Porting those titles to PC takes time and effort as they don’t always translate well to a myriad of setups that aren’t always stellar on day one. This strategy has worked well for Playstation. Day one releases such as God of War Ragnarok, Demon Souls, Horizon Forbidden West, and upcoming Spider-Man 2, will only contribute to the success of the platform.

However, Xbox head Phil Spencer in the past has made remarks not supporting this practice, expressing that players will either need to pay for the title to play on PS5 on day one. Or they need to wait years later and pay a similar price for the port. Xbox still remains the only platform to provide both PC and Xbox versions on day one with cloud, as well as Game Pass as an option.

Spider-Man 2 is another massive exclusive for Playstation 5 made with “no compromises”.

Exclusives for platforms often help bolster sales. Having only one console to worry about upon release also helps with performance and technical issues as the game is designed for that console. It’s no secret that PS5 is the main priority for Sony. This also means studios can utilise the console’s strengths and features directly to the game. This seems to ring true for Spider-Man 2, another major franchise to PS5.

The sequel, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, is being developed exclusively for the PS5, so the developers made no compromises. We ask them to focus on maximizing the functions of the PS5 and creating the best works.
