Path of Exile 2 Announced, Not a Separate Game

During ExileCon which is taking place in Auckland, New Zealand currently Grinding Gear Games have announced Path of Exile 2.

Path of Exile 2 Announced, Not a Separate Game

While Path of Exile 2 sounds like a new game, it’s not separate from the original action-RPG Path of Exile, and acts more like an expansion. But this expansion will completely overhaul the base game when it is released offering “one game, two campaigns’, meaning players can choose whether they want to run the Path of Exile 2 campaign.

In Path of Exile 2, there will be seven new act stories that take place 20 years after the end of the first game. Many changes will come with this including the game’s core systems and reworked mechanics for each of the game’s seven character classes. Along with these gameplay changes are some visual overhauls with physics-based rendering to give a more “realistic look”.

The class archetypes will remain the same as Path of Exile, but you will need to start from scratch in order to play the new story. New characters in Path of Exile 2 can choose from 19 new Ascendancy Classes that bring some different abilities. A new Skill Gem system will replace the current skill system, allowing players to have the same level of customisation as the old one, but with an easier way to do it.

It will be easier to slot support gems with certain skill lines

The latest trailer shows a single hero narrowly escaping their own demise in what looks to be a hanging execution. The trailer then switches to top down view, previewing some of new foes and abilities they possess. Path of Exile 2 looks just as detailed and sinister as the previous instalment. It ends with the main character next to boat which could suggest an excursion to new lands.

Grinding Gear Games has not announced a release date for Path of Exile 2 yet. But the website does mention that the developer will most likely be holding a beta in late 2020 and assures that the development of the next game won’t interfere with the current three-month cycle of new expansion content in the current game.

Will be interesting to see how this does with Diablo 4 coming. Glad they are simplifying the gem system a bit.
