Massive patch released for Kingdom Come: Deliverance during launch week

A very large patch has been released for Kingdom Come: Deliverance, the recently released realistic medieval RPG by Warhorse Studios.

Huge patch released for Kingdom Come Deliverance, more incoming

Warhorse Studios are working as hard as they can to patch its newly released RPG, Kingdom Come: Deliverance.

Daniel Vávra, the studio’s creative director, posted on Twitter earlier this week about more patches that are on the way.

“Hello guys, we are aware about the bugs that could happen and working hard on fixing them. Steam has latest patch already, console owners will get this patch (1.0.3 for PS4, 1.0.0.118 Xbox) ASAP. PS4 patches 1.0.1 & 1.0.2 are the same, the difference is only in territory. 1/1” – Daniel Vávra, Warhorse Studios

Work on the patches began before the game had even launched: PlayStation 4 users reported needing a 23 GB update on February 9th, which had to be downloaded on February 14th (launch day), to get Kingdom Come Deliverance to run. PC users didn’t have this issue, as that additional data was a part of the initial install of the game on Steam.

Kingdom Come Deliverance
Kingdom Come Deliverance takes place in the Medieval kingdom of Bohemia. Bugs were a problem back then also.  Well, the creepy crawly kind were.

So, just how large is the latest patch going to be?

The latest patch for the PlayStation 4 version comes to around 16 GB. Soon the Xbox One version will also receive the same patch. The PC version of the patch has already been rolled out. Daniel Vávra explained that another patch will be released in the next two weeks which will address “quest bugs and other issues like frame drops.”

The patches for Kingdom Come Deliverance need to be so large due to the way that it is split into archives. Each archive is about 2 GB each. Whenever you change something in one of the archives, the entire 2 GB archive needs to be redownloaded.

It’s worthwhile noting that games of this scale needing extensive patches after release is nothing new. The likes of Skyrim and Fallout 4 are both highly regarded and both games included quite a lot of bugs when they were initially released.

  1. Yes, I’m equally pleased to see it doing so well Lich180. I was one of the Kickstarter backers, so it’s gratifying to see something you’ve helped fund (if only in a small way) come to fruition and be well received.

Have you already started playing it? I’ve downloaded it but was toying with waiting until the patch is released that fixes the quest bugs before getting stuck into it.

  2. No problem. I’m glad to see this game getting some good attention, after all the waiting.

I’ve also read that it’s sold over a half million copies in the first few days, which is incredible for a game no major dev wanted to touch.

  3. The patches for Kingdom Come Deliverance are so large because of the way the game is split into archives. Each archive is about 2gigs each, and any time you change something in an archive, the entire 2gig archive has to be redownloaded.

That leads to massive gigabyte patches, when most patches are only a few hundred megabytes.
