In a developer update video today, Blizzard announced that Overwatch hero Symmetra is getting a bit of an overhaul to what she can do. You can watch the video below and read on for an overview of the content.
Symmetra is getting a second ultimate which in addition to her Teleporter now gives her the option to toggle to a second ultimate to build a protective shield. More health will be added to her Teleporter and some is shield health which will help others regenerate.
Her shields are being revamped as a Photon Barrier similar to Reinhart and Winston’s projected shields, although this version is a projectile and moves along a trajectory. It allows for offensive and defensive use. She will also now start with 6 instead of 3 turrets and and they will regenerate in 10 rather than 12 seconds. Her primary fire will also have more range to it.

The new Oasis map will be released on the PTR after Symmetra’s changes are applied. Furthermore, a new feature called “Stay With Group” is on the way which will allow teammates to stay together after a match is finished regardless of whether they are on each other’s friends lists or not.

I am very pleased with the re-work, I used to be a huge Symmetra player but for some time she’s been just undesirable to have on a team, even the most disorganized ones got nearly no benefit from her presence. Hopefully the changes will be introduced into the console by the end of next week, seeing how players need to get ready for season 3.
PTR update has moved very quickly. Her rework has been live on there (at least on PC) for at least a few hours now. For anyone who wants to see the changes in action, here’s a few videos from some Overwatch Youtubers I follow testing them out:
