Blizzard has announced the previously promised PvE story mode for Overwatch 2 is no longer a main priority.
Overwatch 2’s PvE Mode Dropped in Favour of Live Game
A recent live stream covering the roadmap for Overwatch 2 has announced that the developer Blizzard are no longer concentrating on a dedicated PvE mode. The stream that was presented by game director Aaron Keller and executive producer Jared Neuss went over what is in store for players in season 6.
While the first “story-based event” will still be coming to the game, it won’t include the long-term power progression or the hero-specific talent trees that Blizzard originally set out. Keller explained rather than having an all-out “one-time PvE release” they have decided to make the experience co-op gameplay that will be ongoing.
Disappointing for Overwatch 2 fans, as they won’t be getting the dedicated story mode that was originally promised. According to Neuss the studio’s team hasn’t quite made the expected progress needed to deliver the PvE side. Ultimately deciding to forgo “hero mode with talent tree” and the “long-term power progression”.
We wonโt be delivering that dedicated hero mode with talent trees, that long-term power progression, those things just arenโt in our plans anymore.
Executive Producer Jared Neuss
When Overwatch 2 was announced at BlizzCon 2019, it promised a dedicated PvE side of the game. However, now switching gears to focus on the live game. Big story missions, cinematics, co-op events and single-player Hero Mastery missions will be underway this year according to a recent tweet by Neuss.
A clarification that I wanted to make is that, while we made the decision to cut Hero Mode + Talents, we have a lot of great PvE content coming this year.
