A year ago, Nintendo surprised fans by announcing a live-action movie adaptation of The Legend of Zelda, which will involve casting actors to portray the saga’s iconic characters.
Zelda Movie Announcement
This project, co-produced by Sony and Nintendo, brings together Avi Arad, producer of Spider-Man, and Shigeru Miyamoto, the creator of Zelda, as producers, with Wes Ball as director. Now, an initial estimate of the movie’s release has been shared.
During Nintendoโs latest financial presentation, it was revealed that while the Super Mario Bros. movie sequel is set to release in 2026, The Legend of Zelda adaptation will debut in โ202X.โ Although this isn’t a specific date, it suggests that the movie will arrive in theaters sometime between 2025 and 2029.
This means fans will be able to see it in five years or sooner, according to Comicbook. The timeline indicates that production work on the Zelda movie will likely accelerate in the near future.
Aside from Wes Ballโs directorial role, no further details have been revealed, meaning that Nintendo and Sony may advance with the script in 2025 to solidify it and begin the casting process. If not released in 2026, the movie could premiere in 2027.
Zeldaโs Recent Successes
The Nintendo Switch is experiencing peak years for the Zelda franchise. Last year, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, the direct sequel to Breath of the Wildโconsidered one of the best games in the series and of all time, alongside Ocarina of Timeโwas released. This year brought The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom, the first adventure exclusively starring Princess Zelda.
The franchise is undoubtedly in a golden era, reaching a broader audience eager to experience a new, yet undisclosed story in theaters.
