The Roaring Halberd you mentioned but also Elanas Wrathful Axe come to mind I think.
UPDATE: User Hat_Skelly on reddit pointed this out, seems like an obvious connection:
The weapon/staff looks A LOT like the one the Prowling Magus Boss of Dark Souls 2 was using.

>
Wait, actually… the description doesn’t say it’s a staff, does it? It calls it a weapon. And we don’t see it casting a spell, we see it using its weapon skill.
Maybe it’s like the DaS3 version of the Roaring Halberd?
>
With the better resolution it does look like a Halberd and looking through all the Halberd’s there is not one that matches.
There goes that previous speculation.
At Least I can Console myself on finally having a Pyromancy Weapon.
Hi everyone, thanks fextralife for this article: https://fextralife.com/new-ringed-city-screenshots-for-dark-souls-3-final-dlc/
as I’d likely have missed the newly revealed description.
Basically as it’s my hobby to research the etymology of Dark Souls names I made a short video with some thoughts about this new stuff (mostly about the new name), hopefully it’s going to be interesting
(however, it’s naturally very very much uncertain and a lot of speculation for now, because it’s hard to tell anything for sure without a complete picture):
[BBvideo 640,480]https://youtu.be/1Yt4SSsmxZY[/BBvideo]
The most intriguing (though very uncertain) to me is a possible meaning of the sleeping woman’s name as “Dying/Fading Sun” or “Mortal/Human Sun”, though I also discuss other possible theories.
Basically there’s “Daughter of Anor”/”Daughter of Sun” meaning, which is extremely intriguing, but it would be weird and a little wrong (at least to me) to mix real-life Latin and fictional Sindarin in one name ( and there’s a Sindarin element for daughter “iell”/”-iel” (like in Tinúviel for instance) or maiden – “gwen(d)”/”wen” so they could name her Anoriel or something like that if they looked for “Daughter of Sun” meaning)
I love it when I’m being a total degenerate, and then somehow it leads to legit commentary. Now every one knows why some of the crazies in Texas promote secession. We got Willie Nelson, we got Lil Wayne, UGK, we got all the science things, all the edgemication things, we got some of the tech things, more guns than people, a GSP that would be 12th among GNPs around the world, we got Lobos (yeah that one)…the list could go on, but I’ll stop there
>
Texas also makes most scientific instruments in america. my college is basically owned by Texas instruments.
>
I was about to say, yeah. Funny story, I first heard that name for them in New York in a school textbook way long ago. Of course, Texas also makes most school textbooks in America…
>
Hehehehehe, this texas boy calls them Stick Bug or Walking Stick, very scientific round here.
Lol I could have but I’ve never heard of one being called that. Unless that’s a common term somewhere else, I doubt that’s what they meant.
From etymology to entomology…you could have just said Walking Stick
Theoretically it’s possible. There’s many bacillus species, with some quite elongated.
The concept art and the trailer screens don’t have anything remotely like that, at least that I see.
I looked at the trailer again with the art in mind and noticed evidence of the foliage. This suggests the concept art was followed to a degree regarding setting.
I initially wondered about plant names. But that’s not a hit at all. It is possible it’s referring to an insect, but this is one that appears somewhat uncommon

Fun fact, anthrax is caused by a bacillus species
>
Oh? Is it anything like the stuff on Oceiros or vagrants?
I agree with the look of a halberd class weapon on that staff.
I also want to throw out there that Filianore’s caption indicates she’s covered by overly grown Bacillus, which is a rod shaped bacteria class. That’s…interesting
>
I think you make a good point I couldn’t figure out what that weird crescent lobe coming out of the skull was, but now that you say halberd, I totally see it. I was also perplexed that a Knight class would be using a catalyst, but if its a halberd with dark resonant properties manifested by the tangled remains, then that makes sense. As for the remains, they look more demonic than “Manic”, but dark doesn’t really go with demon kind. Unless that theory about dark and chaos being two sides of the same coin is actually correct.
When I hear mad king, I think of the Kings from DS2 and particularly the crown DLCs. Perhaps the Mad King is yet a 5th monarch to be corrupted by a fragment of Manus like Vendrick, Old Iron, Sunken and Ivory Kings…
>
I personally believe this to be the elbow joint of the left arm… (as in: the arm is bent and the left hand is located in front of the skull with the elbow pointing towards us)
To be or not to be… that is the question.
It does look like a Halberd, you’re right.
Yes, the horns look somewhat like the ones on the Ringed Knight, but they resemble those of the Four Kings and Manus as well (to my mind, at least).
Well, if all that was left of Manus were shards, then his powers might be only a fragment of his former self as well, I guess?
Some more thoughts from the name-etymology department:
Filianore is the official English name for the sleeping woman with the shell/egg.
“Filia” means daughter in Latin. Which makes her the prime candidate for Gwyns youngest daughter that he gave to the pygmies and promised to retrieve later.
“Anor”, we already discussed to probably be derived form “sun”. (The e at the end being an indicator for the female form of the name) Daughter of the Sun. Nothing special right?
Well…
“Nore” also means “the shining one” or “god is my light”. “Nore” is furthermore related to the relatively obvious “Eleonora” which is the name of a weapon in Dark Souls 3 and that says “The Profaned Flame was triggered by the curse of these women, relatives of a certain oracle,…”.
So she could very well be tied to the Profaned Flame.
Also, “Nore” is also a more modern form of the name “Helen” from Greek.
In Greek mythology, Helen(a) (the daughter! of Zeus!) was abducted, which led to the Trojan War.
So her being in the city of the pygmies could have been the cause of the whole “Gwyn hates humans” storyline…
Just some food for thought.
Oh, Helena also means “lustre” and “torch”. Pretty fitting roots for her name I believe.
Eh, I’m seeing both hands on the Crucifix skeleton, one just happens to be closed. The twisted horns growing out of it remind me more of the twisted horns growing out of the Ringed Knight armor and sword, and if you inspect it very closely the axe head is actually a halberd. The color of that buff looks identical to the impact particle effect of Affinity though, so there could be something in common. The description saying this effect is supposed to be whimsical has me a bit worried.

Thank you for the info! Got my season pass before AoA.
Finally, a proper four-winged dragon to fight!
Just to throw out fun stuff, the PS store has a Ringed City theme if you pre order (season pass counts).
I am actually even more under the impression that the staff-thingy of the Mad King is somehow associated with Manus.
The staff itself looks like the Manus Catalyst A BIT (way less than the smaller picture from yesterday).
It also reminds me of a Demon’s(?) Greataxe that seems to have crushed a skull which in turn has a skeleton still attached to it.
Note that we can only see a HUGE left hand on it (like that of Manus).
Then there are the protrusions that grow from the back of the skull that reminded me of the horns of Manus and the Bloathead Sorcerers of Dark Souls 1.
Finally, the eyes seem to glow (minor detail, because they are purple and not red) when using the weapon art (probably). The first thing we noted about Manus apart from his huge hand that pulled the chosen undead through the time-portal obviously were his glowing eyes in the darkness.
I also wonder who that adjudicator-clothes wearing grey giant is going to summon? Velka? The Abyss Dragon… it will be very interesting to see how things will play out. I am really hyped to find out more now.
EDIT: I hope we get a foreshadowing of the Abyss Dragon fight like it appearing somehow in good old Dark Souls fashion to scare the shit out of everyone. And that this is what’s depicted in this image. And I hope that we fight it properly in its own boss fight later. I hope it does not turn out to be a “Dragon God”-kind of fight… that one was pretty disappointing to me in Demon’s Souls.
Holy crap, whimsical? What if the Mad King is Jester Thomas?!?!
>
Thanks Fex, that’s way 2 sexy in HD! OMG
Post Updated!!! Enjoy
You know I have a crazed theory that I want to Try to tie to my whole speculation that the Demon Princes was who possessed the Iron King.
What if that new weapon from the Mad King is the Scorching Iron Sceptor? and instead of Fire it emits darkness. That would make the Mad King the OIK.
