During EA’s inaugural EA Play Conference, Mass Effect: Andromeda developer BioWare had some new details to share on the highly anticipated next entry in the iconic Mass Effect universe. The trailer gives players a look at the events of the new game being developed for PS4, Xbox One and PC. No exact release date was announced, but the trailer’s video description confirms an early 2017 target, which is right in line with what we’ve been expecting.
The behind the scenes trailer shows insights into the game’s design and development. You are leaving the Milky Way to help humanity find a new home in the Andromeda Galaxy. A whole new cast of characters, planets and creatures await all powered by the vaunted Frostbite engine. In a series of gameplay clips, we see dune buggy traversal, party based combat the series is known for, and some sleek spaceship shots. The trailer ends with a shot of the new, unnamed female protagonist.
Now we’re getting somewhere! Mass Effect: Andromeda is pushing on to its early 2017 release and is set to serve fans the dynamic storytelling they’ve grown to love. Well they went sort of a similar route with Dragon Age from the first one till the second, but then expanded again with the third, although not as much as they should have. One can always hope they will manage to make the new Mass Effect into something great again.
I remember when Mass Effect was announced for 360. It instantly became one of my most anticipated games ever (and didn’t disappoint!). After three previous installments, I am cautiously awaiting Andromeda. I hope they introduce more stats back into the game; the streamlining of stats, exploration, etc. from ME to ME2 was an unwelcome evolution for the series. The exploration, equipment, lore, characters and character progression were far superior in ME than 2 and 3. I hope that EA has loosened their money grubbing choke hold on Bioware…but seriously doubt it. Still, it’s a great series despite my nitpicking. Hopefully Andromeda provides us with a rich experience with thoughtful lore more akin to the original.
