New Details on Destiny’s Rise of Iron Expansion

Bungie hosted a livestream today during which they showed new content and revealed some new information regarding Destiny’s Rise of Iron expansion, which is due for PS4 and Xbox One on September 20th. Before the walkthrough began however, we were shown the new pre-order item, the Gjallarwing Sparrow, which will also be available through the Eververse store.

Rise of Iron Information

The new Plaguelands were not a part of the walkthrough, instead viewers were walked through the altered Cosmodrome and shown how the landscape has changed dramatically. Here are some of the info highlights:

  • In addition to the snowy environment, the new enemy Devil Splicers have overrun the area and are building on top of the Cosmodrome, changing its look drastically as well as other once familiar locations.
  • There will be new Armor and Weapons for Guardians, as expected.
  • The new content is very story focused, and features strong inspiration from Viking themes.
  • The Plaguelands as a concept is to be an area corrupted by something you can’t understand, evoking a sense of fantasy and desire to discover its secrets.
  • The changes to the landscape are a way to show that Destiny is a dynamic world where players’ decisions changed the land. Events from the past have now influenced how these once familiar areas have changed.
  • We got a few looks at SIVA, the new creeping menace that is a self-replicating, machine-manipulating technology once contained in golden age vaults beneath the Cosmodrome, now free.
  • SIVA has organic and synthetic elements to its design. Not autonomous it needs a mind to control it, hinting at a new major villain.
  • The Devil Splicers are actually hacking into themselves with SIVA, altering their abilities.

At the end of the stream, viewers were told that another reveal stream would be taking place during Gamescom in August. The focus of this is to be the changes to the Crucible that the expansion will bring. Additionally, Bungie will also feature fan focused content during the week of the convention.

Back in June, we covered the expansion’s announcement with some pre-release details and bonuses. Rise of Iron is the centerpiece of the year for Destiny, and may be the final piece of major content we will see for the game, as many are expecting an announcement on a sequel some time next year.

In other Destiny news, Iron Banner is live this week for players, with Control the name of the game. Thoughts on Destiny’s future? Is this a strong finish for the new franchise? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.

  1. I am in love with the new ROI armors… mostly. I don’t like the raid armor on the titans one bit, but the IB armor looks amazing, as does the Iron Lords armor. Finally, titans get a horned helm. Fuck you Shaxx… Fuck you…

  2. We also got to witness Deej shoot everything but the enemies he was ‘aiming’ for. R.I.P. crates.
