None are a 1-to-1 comparison, my point was that Souls is nothing new itself, but is really just an amalgamation of other idea. In AO it is far less punishing and you can save your current level of XP at some very specific points that are also your re-spawn. You regain that XP slowly while gaining XP normally as well. It used to have you lose your item, and lose your XP permanently forever. It is a VERY old game. It is made on like late 90s early 2000s era code.
Yeah, but it doesn’t take that long to get to level 120 or so, if you get someone to let you borrow their largest soul item, and that helps with getting through the game.

To my mind, you do not need to dupe or glitch the game. I get where you’re coming from, playing the game to the point where you have a decent build ready can take some time.
But, if you played through the game several times before (or even once for that matter), you should be able to speed-run through most of it very quickly and obtain the soul-farming items on your way. Then you can grind on end-game enemies that’ll give so many souls that you can get a SL 120 or even 150 build up and running in just a few hours of grinding (max!). Using a starting build that can take advantage of the Hidden Body-spell and the Slumbering Dragoncrest Ring (both can be obtained fairly early), enables you to blaze through most areas VERY quickly, once you know where you HAVE to go and places you can avoid entirely.
Of course you have to play some PVE to get this done, but still, I don’t believe cheating to be required to have fun with the PVP aspect.
Don’t forget that you can still respec your character at Rosaria as well (I do not get why you are only allowed to do this 5 times in every NG-cycle however…).
Just my 2 cents.
They removed the soul-duping glitch too, which sucks for people who want to make builds quickly. I wouldn’t hate it too much if the game wasn’t as tedious to replay.

True, but the stamina system in DS is a lot better than in Skyrim (haven’t played any of the earlier games yet). If you’ve played Anarchy Online, how does the experience loss on death compare to losing souls in DS, and how does the lock-on in LOZ compare to DS’s lock-on?

On some level, I regret never attempting this. Also glad I never had it happen to me. Spell swap and your various descendants, you will not be missed.

RIP great farron farts

Aw man, they’re patching Farting out spells
I’m glad to see it go, but it *was* kind of hilarious to pull off.

In Anarchy Online(an ANCIENT mmo) you lost your experience on death.
You have lock on targeting in Ocarina of Time
A stamina system in the Elder Scrolls games
And many other elements across game titles. Nothing souls does or uses is unique. It’s just a good combination of these things. Also I wouldn’t say Nioh is all that much of a souls like. It feels quite a bit different to play.
Lords of the Fallen is obvi trying to be souls though. However who ever the art directors was, they need to be fired, because the aesthetic of someone sitting down to drawing AND NEVER FUCKING STOPING is only cool to twelve years olds. Jesus that game is a ugly.
If they put in a covenant where you can invade bosses in the 2nd DLC, and you could can re-do bosses somehow without going into NG+ that’d be pretty nice.
lordnoah It’s pointless to even try to explain it to these people, brother. :/
Rip Souls.

Still though. The lack of character creation doesn’t mean casualization, it’s just a different way of story telling and Narrative. It’s the difference between playing your own story of your making in a game, and playing one created by the developers. Both having their strengths and weaknesses when it comes to role playing, thus both being for different purposes.
As for magic. I honestly didn’t like how any Dark Souls game did it. I liked Bloodborne Arcane builds, and Demon’s Souls (though Demon’s Souls did make it on the OP side).
If you want to play an action RPG with magic. I would recommend Kingdoms of Amalur. You can be a pure, stealth, or melee mage with a bunch of unique spells and weapons and abilities designed for mage playstyles (staying away from the enemy, crowd control, and DPS).

come one just because they weren’t made by miyazaki doesn’t mean they aren’t souls games
they have a roll they have a stamina bar they have all the basic elements of a souls games like weapon requirements, souls, losing it upon death etc…
i’m bringing them up because after dark souls 3 i don’t think the magic fanbase can count of miyazaki anymore

Also, Nioh is a little more punishing than Soulsborne is. Probably gets as easy as Souls, though. Nioh doesn’t really allow as many mistakes as Souls. Granted, it’s way easier than it was in the alpha (one shots galore) but still difficult.
Nioh is based on real historic events surrounding William Adams. You play a fantasy of his arrival to Japan. It would be stupid to allow character creation as you’d be limited to “white dude” anyway.
Nioh is more Niche than Dark Souls 3 is by a looooooooong shot.
rip boss invasions. You will be missed.

i’m talking about how the market and the mass appeal will affect souls games, from is a business as well miyazaki may be the president of the company but he is still subordinate to the people who have money like sony and bamco these people are all about money if it was for them to decide they would fill the game with microtransactions
character creation is expensive this is why its easy to remove because most people seem not to miss it after all its easy for them to place themselves over geralt 2.0 and kratos 2.0
invaders chase away the casuals so its not worth for them to lose 30 casuals for the satisfaction of one invader
magic is a problem both in pvp and in pve because it requires changing the behavior of enemies so they can deal with magic or it becomes too easy its like destining 2 or 3 games at the same time
i’m terribly afraid future form games might have no magic
>
I don’t know why you’re bringin Nioh and Lord of the Fallen up. Those are completely different companies making soulsborne-like games. From coulda definitely done better with those 3 things, but it’s not like they flat out removed them from the game…
>
Amen.
Still hope there is another quality souls-like game in the future because I used to love the unique combat and pvp the game had.
What do the “lack of character customization” in Nioh and Lords of the Fallen have to do with anything? They aren’t even Souls games.
“casters shouldn’t play” “casters should be weak” “casters are op”
“invaders should never have the advantage” “invasions should prioritize hosts with phantoms” “invaders have the advantage because they are prepared”
this is what happens when a niche game starts to appeal to the casuals
they start by giving up the small parts of the audience like mages, darkmoon and invaders
then they start taking bigger chunks of the game like the character customization (see Nioh and Lord of the fallen)
with each release the souls series is losing little by little what made it great if its gonna continues this way i don’t want a dark souls 4
Magic is op and I like it!
More seriously, good to see those fixes! The Farron fart glitch was really messing up my op sorcery build
Now OP ness shall have no limits!
I wasn’t calling you out, just saying we should always be mindful that casters still need, something.
>
Oooh ya sorry, you are right I didn’t mean it like that I just meant the ones the resort to the new Sacred flame one shot glitch and along with tumble buffing, if you are a regular spell caster and you put in the effort to make a solid build and don’t cheat the system, ya I think the are outstanding souls player. Plus spells has always felt like a support weapon (probably because they are) so they are going to be weak unless you invest your time into pure magic builds. Sorry again!
>
I mean I know you didn’t mean to imply this, but you’re basically saying all spell casters shouldn’t play because spells are trash without glitches and required it to be even remotely good in PvP.
