Mortal Shell Debuts Gameplay Footage Plus Closed Beta PC This July
Mortal Shell is a new IP by the indie studio Cold Symmetry which is derived from a team of AAA industry veterans. The developer has shared a new trailer featuring gameplay footage for upcoming souls-like during IGN’s Summer of Gaming event today.
The gameplay shared gives a brief overview of how Shells work. If you missed our previous coverage of Mortal Shell, the game is about taking over defeated opponent’s bodies and inheriting their combat techniques. Playing them also reveals more about who they were but you will need to learn their names in order to do so. You will then do the bidding of the mysterious “Dark Father”, searching for hidden sanctums with its dedicated followers.
The trailer also features some of the boss fights, combat animations and the detailed characters which is looking very souls inspired. But getting to play the different characters you meet is a new twist which will invite some interesting gameplay.
In an interview with IGN, the developers unveil some new features, about unlocking characters as well as discover more about the character’s backgrounds. Each time you unlock a new ability, you also reveal a bit more about the vessel’s history, piecing together lore. There are four unique shells to discover, which you can inhabit, each providing a different playstyle which can make you feel like you’re playing a different game.
Another interesting feature is that you can even be “knocked out” of a shell, which occurs when your HP reaches zero. This leaves you fairly vulnerable with only 1 HP out of a shell, which could mean death. Climbing back into your shell is possible, but only for a certain number of times.
You will also need to explore the areas without the use of minimap and won’t have access to fast-travel right away, which sounds like true souls fashion. From what we can see in terms of gameplay revealed the game looks fairly polished with some very interesting mechanics.
Inspiration for games includes Dark Souls, Demon’s Souls and what the devs call the “dark souls before the souls” Severance: Blade of Darkness. Even drawing inspiration from none souls games such as Quake, in terms of “atmosphere” and “world elements”.
Cold Symmetry also announced their closed beta which will be taking place July 3rd to July 10th on PC.
