  • Published by: Capcom
  • Release date: June 30, 2022
  • Price: $39.99
  • Platforms: Windows (Steam), Nintendo Switch

Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak had its release date confirmed during the developer’s live stream. The highly anticipated expansion will bring new challenges for hunters, especially since we are getting introduced to a trio of baddies, called The Three Lords. Sunbreak has been teased for a while now, so it is great to see some actual footage of what we’ll be facing, and where.

Players should note you will need to have completed the  7★ Hub Quest “Serpent Goddess of Thunder” in order to access the new expansion content when it releases.

A New Threat Rises

As Kamura Village has finally defeated the Rampage with the help of the Hunter, it has finally achieved everlasting peace. However, this was short-lived as a new menace reared its ugly head. An unfamiliar canine monster has been spotted in the humble Shrine Ruins, causing mayhem.

Lunagaron

This wolf has been identified as Lunagaron, a frost wyvern that freezes the very air around it. Lunagaron is being hunted by Fiorayne, a knight from another far-off kingdom. She enlists the Hunter’s aid in investigating why monsters of the Kingdom have started branching out into different areas.

The Three Lords and Other Threats

Among all of the new monsters, none are as fierce as The Three Lords. This trio of terrible troubles is responsible for terrifying the Kingdom. It is composed of Lunagaron the frosty wyvern, Malzeno a silver elder dragon and Garangolm a hulking and massive beast that spreads vegetation all around itself.

Aside from these, Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak is introducing some new subspecies of existing monsters. We have Astalos, a large wyvern that makes use of electricity to defend its lands. Blood Orange Bishatens is also a returning creature, now equipped with pinecones that they can hurl effortlessly at hunters. Lastly, we have Shogun Ceanataurs, which originally debuted in Monster Hunter 2. This insectoid makes use of wyvern skulls to reinforce its tough outer shell.

Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak Gets New Wirebug Skills Plus Improved Wall Running

The Emperor’s New Moves

The expansion will also be bringing new tools to the Hunter’s arsenal. First off, all 14 weapons in the game will be receiving new Wirebug skills. While Capcom didn’t reveal any specifics yet, we can’t wait for more info on these as the wirebug skills was able to greatly affect one’s playstyle.

Wall Running will also be getting some improvements. Previously players had to perform a Wirebug dash or leap off from their Palamutes to be able to run up a wall. In Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak, Hunters simply need to run into the wall, fall towards one, or do a midair dodge. Hunters will then initiate the familiar animation of running up any vertical terrain.

Endemic Life and Where to Find Them

Coming up are two new species of Endemic Life. These useful critters roamed the landscape, providing small buffs, healing or other assistance to Hunters out in the field.

Two new Wirebugs are being introduced in Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak. Introducing the Ruby Wirebug and the Gold Wirebug. While both types make it easier to start Wyvern Riding, the Ruby variant makes Mounted Punishers do more damage while the Gold variant increases the chance for monsters to drop materials when using Wyvern Riding attacks.

Elgado Outpost

Last, but not least are the Marionette Spiders. These furry blue arachnids provide Hunters with the ability to ensnare a Monster. This in turn will allow players to influence the movements of these Monsters. You can now grab onto these giant beasts and force them to run into walls. Handy!

New Cast of Characters

Of course, a Hunter is never truly alone. As they journey into an unfamiliar land, they will be joined by new allies. Of course we have Fiorayne, the Knight of the Royal Order who recruits us initially. We also have Admiral Galleus, Bahari the Scientist, the Quest Damsel Chichae, Minayle the Smith and Oboro the Merchant.

This merry band of characters will be hanging out in Elgado. This outpost and the people assigned to it are responsible for the research onto the upcoming monster crisis. To ensure that the players never go hungry, the Kamura Tea Shop has been allowed to operate a stall and serve their ever-famous dangos.
