Microsoft has been confirmed to be taking over the official publishing rights for future The Outer Worlds games.
Microsoft Officially Takes Over Publishing Rights for ‘Future Iterations’ of The Outer Worlds
During Take-Two Interactive’s Q4 2021 earnings call (reported by Seeking Alpha), CEO Strauss Zelnick confirmed that The Outer Worlds had sold more than 3 million units since its launch in October 2021. The call also included Take-Two’s president Karl Slatoff who shared “…we will be participating in the franchise and whatever the future holds for that franchise”, talking about The Outer Worlds.
This comment about Take-Two being committed to the franchise and being part of its “future” was a bit of a confusing statement especially after Microsoft had acquired Obsidian back in 2018, which meant Take-Two could be planning to publish new instalments. However, Private Division went into more detail, which was reported by Gamasutra, who said the company would be continuing to support the 2018’s The Outer Worlds, while Obsidian and Microsoft would be the ones to publish the future iterations of The Outer Worlds.
Private Division is still supporting and marketing The Outer Worlds, including the upcoming release of Murder on Eridanos DLC on Nintendo Switch. Moving forward, Obsidian and Microsoft will be publishing future iterations in the franchise, and we’re absolutely thrilled to see where they take it.
The Outer Worlds wrapped up what seems to be its final expansion Murder on Eridanos in March this year, adding murder mystery, a new area to explore, further weapons and more. If you’re curious about what we thought of the DLC be sure to watch our Youtube video Murder on Eridanos Review.
However there could be a The Outer Worlds sequel in the IP’s future according to industry insider Daniel Ahmad who shared earlier this year that it is currently in pre-production. We are also yet to hear more about Obsidian’s next fantasy RPG Avowed, which was announced back in 2020, described as an “expansive first-person RPG”, set in the Pillars of Eternity universe.
Microsoft seems to be rather busy as rumours of a joint Bethesda and Microsoft press con could be happening in June.
The Outer Worlds is currently available to play on PC, Xbox One, Playstation 4 and Nintendo Switch.
