Miasma Chronicles Gets 17 Minutes of Pre-Alpha Footage

505 Games and The Bearded Ladies have released new pre-alpha footage of Miasma Chronicles, an upcoming tactical RPG.

Miasma Chronicles Gets 17 Minutes of Pre-Alpha Footage

The upcoming tactical-RPG game Miasma Chronicles from the developers of Mutant Year Zero, has gotten some new pre-alpha game footage. The 17-minute video takes a look at game running in standard difficulty and taking on the light tactical combat option.

The Story of Miasma Chronicles

It introduces the main character Elvis and his comical side-kick (side-robot?) Diggs giving him a few pointers in using his glove to break the Miasma wall. The glove seems to get a little too hot and sets it on fire. Diggs jumps into action to put out the disappointed Elvis. Elvis’ main motivation to break through to the other side is to reach his mother who has somehow ended up separated from him. Now this main character only has his robot “brother” as family on this side of the wall. The footage also shows a makeshift town that kind of gives off Final Fantasy 7 vibes, like the Sector 7 Slums.

Tactical Combat

The visuals show off an impressive cut scene but then moves into some gameplay. The isometric view follows Elvis and Diggs as they travel through the Miasma. Along the way they forage for items in the post-apocalyptic setting, grabbing plastics which surely will come in handy. Much like the studio’s previous title Mutant Year Zero, Miasma Chronicles lets players traverse the world, including investigating upper levels of buildings. This title seems to focus on exploring and scavenging, which also leads to weapons mods such as scopes.

Weapon Mods provide upgrades such as scopes in Miasma Chronicles.

About 7 minutes in the characters meet their first set of enemies, amphibian-looking monsters wielding bows and arrows. Elvis and Diggs hunker down behind a wall for cover, debating whether to take on these foes on. Jumping into action the game introduces Action Points which will allow the player to make moves. Each turn will give players two action points per hero. Elvis quickly shoots the Tadpole Scout dealing some good damage. The enemies in turn run for cover and shoot from afar, causing lucky shot damage.

Creatures have evolved into bipeds but have kept their aquatic features on land.

Cover System

Much like cover systems such as Warhammer 40,000: Chaos Gate – Daemonhunters, hiding behind full cover will lower your chances of getting the shot. While partial cover gives a 50% chance. This is what will make combat challenging and make players think about their best strategy. Flanking the enemy and taking the shot from the side will ensure a certain hit. But there is always a risk when trying to predict the enemy’s next move.

Tadpole Scouts are immune to Emp Stun and can leap to high ground in Miasma Chronicles.

What is Miasma Chronicles?

Miasma Chronicles is an upcoming tactical-RPG game set in a futuristic, post-apocalyptic landscape. Players control Elvis, a young man who is joined by an AI robot mentoring him and wields an enigmatic glove able to manipulate the Miasma. The game combines real-time exploration with turn-based combat and RPG elements. The pre-alpha footage of Miasma Chronicles showcases its unique blend of RPG elements with tactical gameplay. The game will be released in 2023 for PC, Playstation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. The game was previously announced during a 505 showcase mid last year.

A host of quirky characters including the body-less mayor.

From the footage this game is shaping up to be highly detailed, taking a different style from The Bearded Ladies’ previous tactical title. The voice acting and visuals look stellar. There also seem to be some interesting characters such as Major Mason who is just a head in a mechanically aided jar. We can wait to see more of what this game will offer.
