The critically acclaimed Wolfenstein II helped Bethesda to claim the top Metacritic ranking. It’s so good.

And here’s a look at the top 15 mid-sized publishing companies and their Metascore list:

  • Headup Games – 68.2
  • Aksys Games – 71.0
  • THQ Nordic – 68.2

In case you’re wondering why EA is classed as a mid-sized company, here’s an explanation from Metacritic:

“EA normally lands in our major publishers list (a year ago, in fact, it ranked #1 on that list), but a decreased release slate in 2017 led to a demotion to our mid-size publishers chart. Speaking of decreases, EA’s Metascore average fell precipitously last year, and the publisher’s rate of critically approved games plunged from 79 percent to just 48 percent. (Metacritic users, meanwhile, trashed almost all of EA’s releases.) The company’s many 2017 disappointments included Need for Speed Payback and Star Wars Battlefront II. EA’s best game last year? FIFA 18.”- Metacritic on EA.

Do you pay any attention to Metacritic reviews and lists? Also, do you even read much into review in general or do you prefer to just play it and see?

Thanks. The flawed algorithm used is for the Critic’s final scores. And while Amazon also has issues, one may filter actual User scores to be seen apart from others.

  2. Okay, thanks for your thoughts, Elhanan. I tend to ignore the user scores on most sites mostly due to those extremes…and the fact that many sites allow scores to be posted before things have been released. Amazon is equally frustrating because of allowing scores before releases.

I do not play enough games to know all of the publishers, but believe Horizon Zero Dawn was the title I was most impressed with this past year. The QA was excellent, and I cannot even play the game; just have watched many streams.

Metacritic uses a flawed algorithm to give final scores, they allow non-players to score games, and the 0-10 extreme scores are often made immediately after launch; also before if I recall 2011 well enough. I prefer other sources for info.

  4. I think Metacritic is like most other major have reviewers. Taking money for good reviews, or pushing good reviews to the top to help drive sales.

I don’t take stock in reviews often. I do agree with with a few reviews, like the near-universal acclaim for Horizon Zero Dawn. But other games are based around niche interests and aren’t a game to appeal to everyone, like No Man’s Sky.

  5. Interesting. What is it in particular about Metacritic that you don’t trust, Elhanan? And who would your publisher of 2017 be?
