Mega Man 11 Preview

Mega Man 11 Preview

Capcom’s Mega Man 11 has been on my radar since Capcom announced it back in December 2017. This game is part of the 30 years anniversary celebration and is being directed by Koji Oda and produced by Kazuhiro Tsuchiya. Mega Man 11 will add some new features while keeping the original style of Mega Man most of us have grown up with. In this preview I will share some of the details about the game, as well as some of the newer features added to a Capcom classic.

Story & Setting

Players control Mega Man as he attempts to stop Dr. Wily from using a Double Gear system he invented based on research conducted back during his university years. Mega Man will have to travel through linear stages before battling against one of Doctor Wily’s eight Robot Masters: In order to be on par with Dr. Wily’s newest creations, Dr. Light implanted the Double Gear system in Mega Man. From this implant Mega Man gains increased power as well as speed, however he also receives side effects from the experiment causing him to overheat if the gears are over used.

Auto, Beat, Dr. Light, Dr. Wily, Eddie, Mega Man, Roll, and Rush will all be in the game. Auto will be selling several items players can purchase in his Auto Shop such as:

  • Extra Life
  • Energy-Tank
  • Weapon-Tank
  • Mystery-Tank
  • Defense Up
  • Eddie
  • Beat

Eddie can be found in the level along with his evil counterpart, Evil Eddie. Eddie delivers items to the player while Evil Eddie steals items in levels forcing players to chase him to retake the stolen item. Beat (Bird) can save players from pits if on Newcomer Mode and he can be bought through Auto’s Item Shop.

Rush can be called onto the area to provide Mega Man a bigger jump boost.

Roll will be seen mostly with Dr. Light while Mega Man attempts to thwart Dr. Wily’s plans.

Mega Man can perform his iconic moves such as the charged Mega Buster attack and slide, as well as obtain new weapons by defeating Robot Master bosses at the end of each level. In Mega Man 11, players will obtain the Double Gear system, which grants Mega Man two additional abilities; the Power Gear and the Speed Gear.

Mega Man will face an array of bosses, each possessing a special ability. After defeating the boss Mega Man will receive a special weapon. There are eight bosses in total.

8 Bosses of Mega Man 11

  • Block Man
  • Acid Man
  • Blast Man
  • Fuse Man
  • Bounce Man
  • Torch Man
  • Impact Man
  • Tundra Man

The Power Gear increases the attack power of Mega Man’s weapons; while the Speed Gear allows Mega Man to slow down time, allowing him to dodge attacks more easily or to focus an enemy’s weak point. Both of these abilities have a limit preventing players from overusing them, creating a more of a challenge when trying to defeat a boss. If players do over use them, they can lose access to them for a certain amount of time, meaning players will need to learn to use them at the right moment in the fight.

When Mega Man’s health is critically low (about 4 bars or so), players can activate both gears to obtain both powers at the same time, allowing him to perform a powerful charge shot. If players spend too much time in this mode, Mega will be left with 1 bar of Hp and no access to charge shots nor the double gear system for a while. By defeating the boss at the end of each stage, a new weapon will be acquired.

Audio & Visuals

Our favorite blue bomber is back again yet his appearance is a little different from previous iterations. Mega Man’s new weapons obtained by defeating Robot Master bosses at the end of each level, are more than just a color swapped visual of Mega Man. He now sports a new costume while he uses a defeated Robot Master’s ability. Mega Man’s known pixel style has evolved into modern look in 2.5D but still possesses his classic look that fans of the game know and love.

Players can choose between English or Japanese audio tracks allowing you to experience the dual language voice acting if wished. While this game will have a few cut-scenes to integrate the story clearer than past games, it is no means overbearing and will help move the story forward.

Final Thoughts

Mega Man 11 revitalizes the classic premise of Mega Man and brings him into the modern age without giving up what made Mega Man a classic. Everyone will enjoy the music each stage possesses and learning how to use the new Double Gear system which adds something new to master. This game will be easy to pick up but will offer a challenge for veterans of Mega Man games. Mega Man 11 is looking to be a great addition in the Mega Man lineup and will be a must for any fans of the franchise.

Mega Man 11 is coming to PC, PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch on October 2nd, 2018.
