Mass Effect TV Show is Now Officially in Development

BioWareโ€™s saga joins the lineup of television adaptations, with a high-profile production that will follow the events of the original trilogy.

Mass Effect for Amazon Prime Video

This new Mass Effect title promises to stay true to the key elements of the saga and aims to avoid any of the mistakes made with Andromeda. The sci-fi franchise has another surprise in store for us, this time as a television series from Amazon Studios.

Variety has revealed that Mass Effect will be Amazon MGM Studiosโ€™ next major TV production for Prime Video. While the plot is still unknown, it is confirmed that it will center on the events of the original trilogy and feature its key characters. The series will introduce Commander Shepard (whose gender is yet to be determined), a 22nd-century soldier who, with the help of a diverse team, faces the threat of the Reapers.

Mass Effect: Andromeda Is Not Included

This means it takes place in the future beyond the events of the original trilogy. Mass Effect will be produced by Electronic Arts and Avi Arad, known for Sonyโ€™s Spider-Man films and related characters. Arad is no stranger to video games, having also produced adaptations of Borderlands and Uncharted.

The series will also be produced by Karim Zreik, who has worked on Marvel series such as Daredevil, Legion, The Punisher, and Luke Cage. Additionally, the scripts will be written by Daniel Casey, the screenwriter behind F9: The Fast Saga, and known for the sci-fi drama Kin and 10 Cloverfield Lane.

Finally moving forward with Mass Effect marks the culmination of negotiations that began in 2021 when Amazon proposed the series to Electronic Arts. A television adaptation would signify the ultimate recognition for Mass Effect, which, beyond its four games, has also inspired an animated movie, novels, comics, and a range of merchandise.

The Mass Effect series joins other adaptation projects, including God of War, also at Amazon, along with new seasons of Fallout and The Last of Us, already on HBO.
