Lords of the Fallen Receives Update 1.6

Lords of the Fallen announce a major update packed with new content for CI Games and Hexworks title, which now enhances its technical performance on the PlayStation 5 Pro.

Lords of the Fallen New Update

One of the best soulslikes in recent years has something important to reveal. While we already knew Lords of the Fallen was one of the PS5 titles optimized for PlayStation 5 Pro, we didnโ€™t expect it to come with numerous other features in a free update.

Today, Lords of the Fallen, the acclaimed action-RPG from Hexworks and published by CI Games, receives update 1.6, which includes a range of important changes, technical improvements, and more.

To start, the dark fantasy soulslike has improved exploration in Umbral (the dark dimension) through a series of quality-of-life features and configuration options. Also noteworthy is the ‘new’ tutorial, created by Lords of the Fallen veterans, which focuses on gameplay, exploration, and combat in the game’s dark dimension.

Perhaps the most ‘striking’ part of the patch is that Lords of the Fallen is now optimized for PlayStation 5 Pro. The game runs at dynamic 4K and 60 FPS in performance mode, while quality mode delivers 4K at 30 FPS. Texture density has increased by 40%.

Patch Notes

Gameplay Enhancements Based on community feedback and extensive playtesting, we’ve made further gameplay adjustments. Itโ€™s rewarding to see our “Recent Reviews” score on Steam increase, reflecting the positive impact of these continuous improvements, and weโ€™re committed to staying on this path with your valuable feedback.

  • Troop Density: Based on your input, weโ€™ve adjusted certain mob encounters to create a smoother, more immersive combat experience by isolating instances to prevent mobs from piling up. Returning players may want to start anew, as weโ€™ve added some surprises. (The original enemy distribution and density can still be accessed through NG+ modifiers.)
  • Ranged Enemies: Weโ€™ve adjusted certain ranged units’ perception to correct cases that felt unfair or unrealistic.
  • Jumps: Platforms in Pilgrimโ€™s Perch have been refined with improved indicators, making jumps clearer and navigation smoother.
  • PvP Scaling: To enhance skill-based PvP, weโ€™ve rebalanced scaling mechanics, especially for weapons and spells with magical infusion. These changes are exclusive to PvP, so PvE players can continue with their current builds unaffected.
  • Attack Drift: Some weapon attacks have been slightly adjusted to reduce drift, providing a greater sense of control while preserving effectiveness and supporting your playstyle.

Improved Tutorial Experience

Weโ€™ve taken steps to further enrich new players’ experience in Lords of the Fallen, based on feedback from our veteran Lampbearers. We want all new players to feel empowered on their journey, and we understand that some early tutorials may have presented a steep learning curve.

  • Improved Lighting in the Profaned Sepulcher: Enhanced lighting and visual adjustments make this initial tutorial area clearer and easier to navigate.
  • Gradual Tutorialization of Umbral: Core skills like “soul rip” and “siphoning” now have dedicated tutorial spaces later in Redcopse, allowing new players to gradually familiarize themselves with each feature.
  • Simplified First Jump Tutorial: Weโ€™ve refined the jump tutorial to be more accessible (raise your hand in the comments if you cleared it on the first try).
  • Lightreaper Boss Adjustment in NG0: To clarify the intended design of this encounter, weโ€™ve removed the Lightreaper boss fight from the tutorial area for NG0 players. Donโ€™t worryโ€”the Lightreaper still lurks in Mournstead and will make a surprise return in NG+.

A More Immersive Umbral

Umbral, the parallel realm intertwined with Axiomโ€™s living world, is accessible at any point in the game and offers a vast world of alternate paths, hidden treasures, and secrets. We know how much you enjoy exploring Mournstead, and many of you have requested a more accessible Umbral realm.

With this in mind, weโ€™ve made some adjustments to improve its immersion while preserving its mysterious and challenging nature.

Though Umbral remains intentionally hostile, weโ€™ve adjusted its sounds, visual effects, and enemy spawn curve. Now, the Threads (Umbralโ€™s natives) take longer to detect your presence, giving you precious time to explore before the realmโ€™s haunting intensifies. Finally, the Scarlet Shadow will appear, forcing you to decide: escape or face an epic duel.

  • Dynamic Ambient Sound: The initial entry into Umbral now features subtler soundscapes that increase in intensity the longer you stay, reaching a crescendo before you must find an exit or risk facing the Crimson Reaper.
  • Adjusted Enemy Spawn Curve: Enemy spawns are now better synchronized to create a gradual and smoother tension buildup.
  • Scarlet Shadow Delay Increased: You now have more time to explore before the Scarlet Shadow appears, heightening suspense.
  • Reduced Vignette Effect: Based on player feedback, weโ€™ve softened the vignette effect to improve visibility while exploring Umbral.
  • Clearer Umbral Eggs: Weโ€™ve added a special effect to the eggs from which Umbral natives emerge, as some players had difficulty distinguishing between active and inactive eggs.

Performance Weโ€™ve implemented additional performance improvements in several of the gameโ€™s most graphically demanding areas, optimizing the experience for players on lower-spec computers.

Multiplayer Now that Lords of the Fallen fully utilizes the power of PS5 Pro, prepare for a new wave of cross-platform players venturing into Mournstead! Be sure to greet them warmly in co-opโ€”or with the cold edge of your sword in PvP.

Rumor has it that Lords of the Fallen may have a sequel (which would be the third game in this saga, following the original 2014 release), with an announcement possibly coming in 2025, and some details have been leaked.

Lords of the Fallen is available on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. The PS5 version is now optimized for PS5 Pro, so you can enjoy its technical improvements starting November 7, 2024.
